EUCALYPTUS ~ (Eucalyptus
Globulus) (odour intensity 7)
Eucalyptus comes from the leaves of the Blue Gum tree growing in Spain and Portugal. It
has a lovely strong, fresh, balsamic odour, one with which we are all familiar I am sure.
It's toxicity rating is C, so not too strong.
It blends well with Grapefruit, Lavender, Marjoram, Peppermint, Rosemary and Teatree and
its main property is that it is highly antiseptic and is particularly good for respitory
complaints. It is an excellent pulmonary antiseptic and has expectorant properties, and is
also useful for throat infections and sinusitis.
Strangely it has a cooling effect on the body, and so is particularly good for fevers when
used in a compress.
I must own up to using Eucalyptus mostly mixed with Rosemary and Lavender for any muscular
aches and rheumatic pains, as it concentrates its action on the urinary tract to increase
the excretion of urea and I always found that it gave very quick relief.
I well remember that my son, with several other lads, decided to run an all night Squash
marathon to raise money for charity, and my friend and myself offered our services as
masseuses. Taking our portable tables, we set up outside the courts and massaged aching
limbs and strained backs so that they could keep going all night, and we were delighted to
be told a few days after that some of the lads had done this type of marathon before but
were terribly stiff and unable to work for several days afterwards, but this time they had
no aching muscles or problems of any kind, and needless to say, one of the oils used was
Eucalyptus.
Enjoy your oils.
