Earth Healing Ceremony

On Earth Healing Day, October 12th 1996, my daughters (who when then aged 14, 13 and 12 years) and I, did a ceremony together. It was beautiful and I would like to share it with you. We held the ceremony indoors, because we wanted to use candles and it was rather windy outside!

We set up an "Earth Altar" on a circular table. To the north we placed some salt, to represent the earth; to the east we placed a feather and an incense stick, to represent air; to the south we placed a "night-light" candle, to represent fire; and to the west we placed a bowl of water. In the centre of the table we put a small "cauldron". We also put out a green candle, a pink candle and a white candle; and a bottle each of Bergamot, Rosemary and Niaouli essential oils, along with some special "Earth Incense" which my friend Michele had made for us. Next, Aimee drew on a piece of parchment - symbols to represent earth, air, fire and water; and blessing, peace, love and healing. We all wrote, on separate pieces of paper, a personal prayer - asking for healing for the Earth, in our own words.

We burned the Earth Incense (which had a wonderful aroma) and began the ritual by making the offerings to the cardinal points. Aimee stood in the north and offered the salt; Katie stood in the east, offered the feather and lit the incense stick; I stood in the south and offered the flame; Lucy stood in the west and offered the water. We asked for help in our endeavours from the "powers that be" and stated the reason for our gathering and our intention.

I then anointed the green candle with Niaouli oil, for healing; and lit it. We visualised a green light, coming up from the candle and encompassing the Earth with its healing light. Next I anointed the pink candle with rosemary oil, for love, and lit it. We visualised a pink light encompassing the Earth with love. Then I anointed the white candle with bergamot oil, for peace, and lit it. We visualised the white light encompassing the Earth with its protection and with peace.

Aimee read out her "prayer" and then lit her piece of paper from the flames of each of the candles, asking for healing, love and peace for the Earth; and dropped the paper into the cauldron. Katie read out her "prayer" and did the same as Aimee, followed by myself and then Lucy. (I was very impressed with the wording of the girls "prayers".) After that, Aimee took the parchment (with the symbols that she'd drawn on it), lit it from each of the flames and dropped it into the cauldron too.

We linked hands around the table and closed our eyes, visualising healing for the Earth; and peace and love for all her inhabitants. We stood in silence for several minutes and then closed the ritual - giving thanks. The candles were left to burn down and all of the ashes in the cauldron, along with the ashes from the incense, were sprinkled in the garden. It was a lovely ritual and the children enjoyed taking part, being involved and "doing their bit" for the Earth.
