Written frankly, honestly and often with humour, and including 32 pages of photographs, this book helps you to understand what the Native Americans had to endure at the hands of the white man, but also explains and shares with the reader the beliefs and the age-old ceremonies of the Lakota tribe (Sioux). Quoting from the back cover:- "Storyteller, rebel, medicine man, Lame Deer was born almost a century ago on the Rosebud Reservation in South Dakota. A full-blooded Sioux, he was many things in the white man's world - rodeo clown, painter, prisoner. But, above all, he was holy man of the Lakota tribe. The story he tells is one of harsh youth and reckless manhood, shotgun marriage and divorce, history and folklore as rich today as ever - and of his fierce struggle to keep pride alive, though living as a stranger in his own ancestral land." I found it to be a fascinating insight into the lives of these very spiritual people and, if you have any interest in the Native Americans, I whole-heartedly recommend that you read it (although, for fellow vegetarians, I will warn you that there are a couple of passages and descriptions which you may find a bit "hard to swallow"!).
