Thurisaz

This time we will look at THURISAZ, the Rune of personal affairs. It is related to the norse god Thor. When we look at the upright symbol of Thurisaz, with some imagination, we can see a P in it, although the line upwards is drawn a bit too high in the symbol. The P for Personal. Actually, the sign represents an opening, a gateway. A gateway to your self. And not only your self, but also to your Self, your spiritual world.

What do we know when we draw Thurisaz:

Normal: There is work to be done, both within yourself and without. You may be ready to contact the Divine. You can now see that which is hidden inside, and know that in so doing, you will be doing the right action. Waiting may be just the right action to take. If you wait, remove resistance while waiting.

Inverted: Personal relationships are accented now. Break-ups may be more plentiful than unions now. Keep a sense of good humor no matter what happens. Even failures may be re-routed opportunities.

As you can see, Thurisaz deals with all the personal aspects. Be it your spiritual self or your life among other people, Thurisaz tells you that there is a lot of good to be gained, if you only keep an open eye and an open mind. Interestingly enough there is nothing in this view that needs some adaptation to the life of this time. In the other Rune articles we saw that some explanations needed to be reviewed, like the amount of cattle we had when drawing Fehu. The path of personal growth and development is something that has been considered important by all cultures who have grown to this awareness.

Now, how do we grow this inner person, what do we have to do to keep in harmony with other people? There are many ways. You can try meditation, which is a very good way to stimulate inner growth. Do not feel alarmed by the mere word, there are many forms of meditation. Art, or music are meditative techniques just as good as Yoga or Zen. Learn to see and enjoy the beautiful things. A sunset, an early dawn, dew on a flower's petals. Learn to see through the errors and mistakes of other people, they also are here to learn the proper way. They may take a different road from you, after all they are different people. Once you understand that we all are walking along the same road, and you are honest enough to see that you make the same blunders as all others do, that is when you can grow. That is when you have accomplished what Thurisaz can mean.
