Hands-On Instructions
Cold Boot (Cold Start)
Perform this operation to start windows when the computer
power is off:
Warm Boot (Warm Start)
Perform this operation if you want to re-start windows
without turning the power switch.
- Press Alt + Ctrl + Del two times
Changing the
Desktop View
- Click the Start
button
- Point to Settings
- Point to Folder Options...
- Select the view you want Web
Style or Classic
Style
Exploring the
Desktop
- If the Desktop view is Classic
Style change it to Web
Style
- Move the mouse in all directions (up,
down, left, and right) and note the movement of the mouse pointer.
- Point to My
Computer icon. Notice that
the icon get highlighted. This tell you the object associated with My
Computer is currently selected.
- Point to the link of the My
Documents icon to view its
ToolTip.
- Point to button on the taskbar to view
their ToolTips.
Exploring Menus
- Click the Start
button to open the Start menu.
- Point to each command in the menu.
Notice the cascading menu
when you point to Find,
Settings,
Documents,
Favorites,
and Programs.
- Click a blank are of the desktop to close
the Start
menu.
Exploring
Windows
- Click the Start
button to open the Start menu.
- Click the Help
icon.
Reading a Help topic:
- Click the Contents
tab.
- Click Introducing
Windows 98.
- Click How
to Use Help.
- Click Find
a topic.
- Read the displayed help information.
- Click the underlined word frame.
Notice the definition of the word is displayed in a pop-up box.
- Click the pop-up box to clear it.
Using the Scrolling Bar:
- Click the Index
tab.
- Click the down
scrolling arrow five times.
- To continuously scroll the list, point to
the down scrolling arrow
and hold down the left mouse button for few seconds.
- Click the up
scrolling arrow several times.
- Click on the scroll bar below the scroll
box several times.
- Drag the scroll
box to the lower third of the
scroll bar.
- Click above the scroll box.
- Using the scroll bar, locate the topic clearing
Help contents from screen.
- Double-click on this topic to display it.
- Read the Help information on this topic.
- Following the Help information, click on
the Hide
icon to hide the left frame.
Using a Text Box:
- Click in the text box.
- Select the text in the text box.
- Type my
c. Notice that list of
topics automatically scroll to take to the topic that matches the text you
are typing.
Using
a Dialog Box
- Double-click the My
Computer topic.
- A dialog box containing a list of
subtopics is displayed.
- Scroll the list and select To
see what's on my computer.
- Click the Display
button.
- Read the information on this topic.
Hiding the left Help frame:
- Click on the Hide
icon.
Working
with Multiple Windows
- Click the My
Computer icon.
- To make the Help
window active, click anywhere in the Help
window or click it's icon on the taskbar.
- Make the My
Computer window active again.
Exploring the My Computer
window:
- Display the drop-down File, Edit, View,
Go, and Favorites menus by clicking on the corresponding menu name on the
menu bar.
- To close a pull-down menu click any place
outside the menu.
- Click View/Toolbars
and verify that the Standard
Buttons and the Address
Bar are the only two toolbars
selected.
Working with
Shortcut-menu
- Right-click on the toolbar to display the toolbar
shortcut-menu.
- Click on Text
Labels to uncheck and disable
this feature. Notice that the toolbar icon now do not display text
labels.
- Point to any button on the Standard
Toolbar to see the icon's ToolTip.
- Right-click on any toolbar and select Text
Labels to redisplay the button
names.
- Use the shortcut-menu to hide the Standard
toolbar.
- Use the shortcut-menu again to redisplay
the Standard toolbar.
Dragging with the Toolbar
slider
- Drag the Toolbar
slider for the address toolbar up
into the middle of the standard toolbar.
- Double-click the Toolbar
slider of the address bar to
maximize the toolbar.
- Drag the Toolbar
slider of the address bar to the
right until each bar occupiers half the row space.
- Drag the Toolbar
slider of the address bar back
down to the space below the Standard toolbar.
Sizing the Windows
- Make My
Computer window active.
- Click the Maximize
button to maximize the window.
- Click the Restore
button to restore the original size.
- Point to the corner of the My Computer
window until the pointer change to a diagonal double-pointed arrow and drag
the mouse to resize the window.
- Return the window to its original size.
- Minimize the My
Computer window.
- Click on the My
Computer button on the task bar
to display the window.
Arranging Windows
- Right-click on any blank area of the
taskbar.
- Choose Cascade Windows.
- Right-click on any blank area of the
taskbar.
- Choose Tile Windows Vertically.
- Right-click on any blank area of the
taskbar.
- Choose Tile Windows Horizontally.
- Right-click on any blank area of the
taskbar.
- Choose Undo Tile.
- Click on the Show Desktop icon to minimize
all windows.
Checking
Properties
- Click the My
Computer button on the task bar.
- Maximize the window.
- Point to the C:
icon.
- Right-Click C:
icon to display the short-cut meun.
- Choose Properties.
- Look through the properties tabs and then
click Cancel
to close the dialog box.
Viewing files on drive C
- Click the C: drive icon to view the files
on drive C.
- Right-click on any file and select
Properties.
- Look through the properties information
and then click on Cancel to close the dialog box.
