I like Anton Pavlovich Chekov very much, and since he seems to be fairly easy to read I will probably start with some of his short stories. The first of which is "A Story Told by Lady N".
The second is a story of a young peasant girl who is horribly abused by her masters, and performs a terrible act while hallucinating, to save herself. it is called "I want to Sleep".
Also, I can't find many of the stories which I really like, either in this country, or in Russian bookstores.
One story which I have been looking for, for several years now is "A Basket of Fur Cones" by Konstantine Postovsky. It is the story of the composer Griegg, and a young girl named Dagne Ernst. They were friends when she was young and used to gather fir cones near his cabin. He always told her that he had a birthday present for her, but couldn't give it to her until her eighteenth birthday. He never told her what it was. When Dagne turns eighteen, and finally finds out what her present is, it is so wonderful! Does anyone out there know where I can obtain this story? The only copy I have ever seen is in a library in Moscow.
Also, be sure to check out my poetry page, which also has The Circle of World Literature Ring on it, so you can visit more great literature sites!
