Elizabeth Partridge Tillotson Family

1. Edwin WHITING. He married Elizabeth Partridge TILLOTSON, daughter of Samuel TILLOTSON (4 Oct 1759-3 Dec 1848) & Sarah PARTRIDGE (15 May 1769-11 Apr 1846), on 21 Sep 1833 in Lee, Berkshire County, MA. Born on 15 Apr 1814 in Tyringham, Berkshire county, MA. Elizabeth Partridge died in probably UT on 8 Dec 1892; she was 78. They were married a second time 27 Jan 1846 in Nauvoo, IL. Edwin was from Nelson, Portage County, OH.

Jane Tillotson doesn't seem to have had much contact withthem and they are not mentioned in her diaries. It is apparent that by 1846 they had converted to the Mormon religion and left the Brunswick area. They resided in Springfield, Utah.

Elizabeth was a teacher in Nelson, Ohio before her marriage. She was an early convert to Mormonism and apparently her Methodist parents were distraught by her loss to Methodism. However, at some point her sister, Polly tillotson Prichard, also embraced Mormonism and Polly's daughter, Sarah, married Lorenzo Snow who later became Priest ofthe Church (Mormon). After the marriage of Elizabeth and Edwin they lived in Kirtland, Ohio where they suffered from mob violence and pillage against the Mormons. After moving to Lima, Illinois they had their home and Edwin's chair shop burned by a mob. They wre living in Nauvoo, Illinois when Joseph Smith was martyred. During this time Edwin was a Colonel in the Nauvoo Legion. After the exodus from Nauvoo they lived in Mt. Pisgah, Union County, Iowa. They went by wagon to Utah in 1849, crossing the plains with the Ezra T. Benson Company and arriving in Salt Lake City in November. They endured many hardships and sufferings on the trip. They were sent by Brigham Young in Isaac Morley's Company to found a settlement in the Sampete Valley, Utah. this settlement was called Manti.
