Polly Tillotson Family

1. Polly TILLOTSON. Born on 28 Mar 1804 in Tyringham or Lee, Berkshire county, MA. Polly died in Nelson, Portage County, OH on 21 Mar 1886; she was 81. She first married John PRICHARD, son of Benjamin PRICHARD & Ann VAUGHN, on 13 Feb 1823 in Brunswick, Medina Co, OH.[1],[2] Born on 27 Jan 1798 in Great Barrington, MA. John died in Nelson, Portage County, OH on 19 Nov 1838; he was 40. According to Medina County Marriage Records Vol A, page 20 they were married by Peter Berdan, J.P.

According to Upton, they lived a long life in a log house in Nelson, Portage County, Ohio located on the road later called the Garrettsville Road. Their son, George Pritchard, and his wife, Emily, lived in the same house as late as 1910. (Upton, History of the Western Reserve) Polly may have lived a long life, but her husband's did not.

This family moved to Nelson, Ohio, the town where Jane's second husband, Belden Colton Linzee, was from. I have not been able to find them in the Census records. Jane invariably refers to Aunt Polly's place since she was twice a widow by 1858.

They had the following children:

2 i. Sarah Ann (1826-)

3 ii. John (1829-)

4 iii. George (1831-)

5 iv. Cordelia Jane Tillotson (1834-)

6 v. Erastus Allen (1839-)

She second married Thomas DUTCHER, on 3 Apr 1847. Born on 6 Jun 1787 in New York. Thomas died in Nelson, Portage County, OH on 12 Aug 1850; he was 63.

They had one child:

7 i. Polly Sophronia (1849-1912)

2. Sarah Ann PRICHARD. Born on 29 Nov 1826. She married Lorenzo SNOW. He was later a priest in the Mormom church.

3. John PRICHARD. Born on 10 Sep 1829 in Jefferson, Portage County, OH. He married Eliza Jane LINZEE, daughter of William H. LINZEE & Mary Elizabeth COLTON, on 28 May 1857 in Revenna, Portge County, OH. Born on 21 Jun 1839. Eliza Jane died bef 1904; she was 64.

She was the sister of Jane Tillotson's second husband, Belden Colton Linzee.

The 1860 U.S. Census for Nelson lists a John Prichard who was a 30 year old sawmill owner born in Ohio. He has a wife, Eliza J., aged 21, and a son John, aged two years. ELiza was the sister of Belden Colton Linzee who married Jane in 1862.

Jane has a number of diary entries which refer to a John who seems to be a Prichard about her own age. In one entry she refers to John and wife, Eliza. It is evident that she had a close relationship with the John Prichard family before and during the time she lived in Nelson. Since it appears that John and Belden Colton Linzee were friends it is even possible that Jane met Belden through John Prichard, jr. and his wife.

They had one child:

8 i. Henry T.

4. George PRICHARD. Born on 3 Dec 1831 in Nelson, Portage County, OH. He married Emily R. BOSWORTH, in Nelson, Portage County, OH.[2]

Harriet Upton in her History of the Western Reserve comments on John and Polly Prichard saying, "here [Nelson] in a log house on the road now known as the Garrettsville road they lived a long and useful life. ... On this same spot still [1910] lives her son, George Pritchard, and his wife, Emily, and this old home has been one of cheer, love and hospitality from its founding." (379-80)

There are a number of references which clearly refer to this family in Jane's diary. She apparently had a very close relationship to George and Emily.

5. Cordelia Jane Tillotson PRICHARD. Born on 12 Aug 1834 in Nelson, Portage County, OH.[2] She married Henry Talcott. He was from Garretsville, OH. They lived in Jefferson, OH.

The IGI lists a daughter named Cordelia Jane Tillotson Prichard with a birthday two days before Jane's in Brunswick. Is it a coincidence that she contained Jane Tillotson in her name? She is mentioned several times in the diaries as Cordia.

6. Erastus Allen PRICHARD. Born on 19 Aug 1839 in Nelson, Portage County, OH.[2] According to Jane Tillotson's diary he was called Rattie.

Also living in the Prichard house in 1860 is an Erastus A. Prichard, a 21 year old farmer. This Erastus was also a son of John and Polly. Jane often speaks of Aunt Polly and "Rattie" together. I suspect the "Rattie" of the diaries is Erastus Prichard. Rattie is often mentioned together with Aunt Polly and George and Emily.
