Madame C. J. Walker, businesswoman, philanthropist, social activist, entrepreneur, chemist, is generally accepted as the 1st female millionaire in the United States. She was born Sarah Breedlove in 1867 in Delta, Louisiana. Her Achievements include creating hair-care products for black women and making innovative improvements to the pressing comb and conditioner for hair-straightening. On January 28, 1998 the United States Postal Service issued the Madame C.J. Walker commemorative stamp, the 21st in the Black Heritage Series, at a first-day-of-issue ceremony at the Madame Walker Theatre Center in Indianapolis.
