NETIQUETTE

Netiquette 1 Netiquette 2 Netiquette 3 Netiquette 4 Netiquette 5 Netiquette 6

The last entry above is given only because of the humor involved.

Here's a summary of what one should know re NEWSGROUP NETIQUETTE:

How to cyber-do unto others as you would have them cyber-do unto you ... If you want newsgroup readers to pay attention to your ideas, keep your replies concise:

  • Use short sentences and paragraphs.
  • Don't abbreviate (keep the acronyms to a minimum).
  • Don't use all capital letters.
  • Don't add lots of quoted material.
  • Try to stick to one or two basic ideas in a single posting.

Some newsgroups and bulletin boards are moderated, which means that articles and messages aren't posted directly to the list after you submit them. Instead, they're e-mailed to a person or a program who posts the article only if he, she, or it feels that it's appropriate to the group. Remember the following:

  • Human moderators, because they're unpaid volunteers, do not process items instantaneously, so it can take a day or two for items to be processed. Don't nag.

  • If you post an article for a moderated group or board, your article goes automatically to the moderator. You don't need to send an article to a space place or address.

  • If your article doesn't appear and you don't really know why, post a polite inquiry to the same group or board.

ICQ2000 Homepage ... this one gets special mention ... most of you folks know why.
ICQ Plus

Allows you to change the appearance of icq. When installed, it integrates with icq by adding a menu item to the main menu. Choosing this menu item brings up a dialog which lets you configure icq's appearance in several ways. You can apply a predefined skin or create one yourself. It also allows you to change the appearance of individual features as well. You can change background images of dialog boxes (BMP, JPEG, and GIF images are supported), change the main menu image, set your own animated GIF or AVI file instead of standard icq animation, and change the style of dialog boxes, buttons, other controls, and individual dialog box settings. Skin files can be imported and exported via ZIP file. It also has multi-user and multi-icq support. And it runs on Windows 95/98/NT and 2000.
ICQ Toolkit ... make some small changes to the look and feel of your favorite program.

Chatting on NetMeeting

NetMeeting's Chat window enables you to type a message and have that message appear simultaneously on the screens of the other participants. To use NetMeeting's Chat feature, follow these steps:

  1. Click the Chat button at the bottom of the NetMeeting window or choose Tools, Chat on the NetMeeting Menu bar (or press Ctrl+T) to open the Chat window on your desktop. That action also opens a Chat window on each of the other conference participants' screens.

  2. Type a message into the Message text box at the bottom of the Chat window.

  3. To send your message to all the other conference participants, press Enter or click the large Send button in the lower-right corner of the Chat window.

Your message appears in the upper panel of the Chat window of all conference participants. Other participants can send messages in the same way. Each message in the Chat window is preceded by the name of the participant who sent the message.

AND FINALLY - INTERNET OF THE FUTURE

What will the Internet of the future be like? Here are some ideas, either coming, dreamed, or being used on a limited scale.

Medicine: Doctors will diagnose conditions in patients anywhere in the world. Surgeons can guide robots to perform remote surgery. Physicians will communicate via email with patients. Transportation: Commercial airlines will be flown without pilots. Cars will allow for drivers to have hands-free access to the Internet.

Home: Microchips in walls in homes will monitor and adjust room temperatures and detect motion and call fire and police departments. Appliances will come automatically linked into a network, a fridge will detect when milk is getting low and will order more.

Entertainment: Tele-immersion technology will be used in restaurants. A high-bandwidth Internet connection would link a person in a restaurant cubicle via video to other family members at home, letting them have dinner together. Books: All books could be email books. Simply download the text and pay the fee--or not. Libraries may lend books over the Internet.

Education: Closed-circuit learning might be extended even to grade school kids. Snow days could become a thing of the past.

This fella dials a wrong number... The other person, a woman, says, "Hello?"
He then says, "Hello, could I speak to Joey?"...
The woman answers, "Uh... I don't think so... he's only 2 months old."
He pauses and says, "I'll wait."

So now on to making webpages ... Webpage Building ... an exciting part of the internet.
Or back to our … Navigator Page … take care now.
