Mae West was born on August 17, 1893 in Brooklyn, NY, and she became a famous actress, writer, musician, and comedian. One of the plays she wrote titled "Sex" was notable for the scandal surrounding it (she was arrested in 1926; those were different times then). In 1935, Mae West was the highest paid woman in the U.S., earning $480,833 ... and this was depression time; let's not forget it.
Sharing a cab with a friend is a typical event in New York, and so is the knotty question of who pays what when the first person gets off. Should the first person leave half or all that the meter is flashing, or perhaps nothing? I came up with a solution based on a simple equitable formula. It only requires anticipating how much the second person would pay at the final stop. Take the fare at the first stop and multiply it by the final fare. Now divide the first number by the second number and you get the first person’s fair share. Here’s an example: When the first person gets off, let’s say the fare (including tip) is $10. When the second person gets off, the final fare (including tip) is estimated to be $15. So 10 times 15 is 150, 10 plus 15 is 25, 150 divided by 15 is 6. The first rider’s fair share is $6, and the second passenger will pay the remainder, $9 ... Now isn’t that fare fair? The closer the two stops are, the closer the two shares are to 50-50. The farther apart the stops are,, the closer the second person’s share is to the whole thing.
