Global Electronic Library Ted Nelson coined the term docuverse to describe a global distributed electronic library of interconnected documents, in other words a global metadocument, where there are tens of thousands of interconnected pages within a network of documents that have innumerable navigational paths. Nelson's docuverse paradigm is manifested in the World Wide Web because it spans the globe and connect millions of documents. And while the underlying hypertext technology and URL protocols made the Web's global electronic library technically possible, the various Web search engines and directories have made Nelson's docuverse possible. The Internet search engines and directories provide access to Nelson's docuverse, allowing users to locate starting points for browsing hyperlinked texts. Thus the theories of Bush, Landow, and Nelson have found their actuality in the Web. |
