What is in the Technology section? The Technology section introduces the reader to hypertext, hypermedia, and multimedia, technologies as well as people who contributed to the development of the field: Vannevar Bush, Douglas Engelbart, and Ted Nelson. The section also addresses the electronic revolution that is taking place and changing the way in which we communicate. While this project focuses on multimedia technology, it also addresses how it developed from the earlier hypertext systems. In Multimedia: Making it Work Vaughn describes a hypertext system: "When words are indexed to other words, you have a hypertext system; the text part of this term represents the project's content and meaning, rather than the graphical presentations of the text" (Vaughn 228). The technology upon which hypertext systems are able to connect textual information in a nonlinear format is the same technology upon which we build multimedia applications, games, computer-based training programs, and popular multimedia titles. |
