24. William Buckalew. Born in 1690 in Perth Amboy, Middlesex Co., NJ. William died before 22 October 1753; he was 63.

Referred to as "my dear and beloved brother William" in George's will, 10 Nov 1739, Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, NJ.
William died before the date of his father's will, 22 Oct 1753.

William married Elizabeth Everson.

They had the following children:

25. Frederick P. (Phredrick) Buckalew. Born in 1692 in Perth Amboy, Middlesex Co., NJ. Frederick P. (Phredrick) died in 1777; he was 85.

1749, 12 Aug: Executor of friend Henry Disbrow's will. (NJ Archives, Vol. 30, p.144)

1776, 30 July; Will (probated 29 Mar 1777): Left bequest to his wife Mercy and his children, all named and identified as children of first wife, (unnamed) or second wife Mercy. Bequests to his brother Thomas and Thomas' sons David and Thomas', and daughters Effy and Mary. His executor was Abraham Buckalew, son of Peter. [I have a thermofaxed copy of this will. LTB]

Frederick P. (Phredrick) first married Mercy.

1776, 30 July (probated 1777, 29 Mar.) Mentioned in Frederick's will as his second wife.

On 17 February 1750 when Frederick P. (Phredrick) was 58, he second married Widow Mary Rose, in Middlexex Co., NJ.

Mary Rose's widowhood noted in application for marriage license, 17 Feb 1750. A William Rose and on the bond with Frederick Buckalew.

26. Thomas Buckalew , Sr. Born in 1694/1709 in Middlesex Co, NJ. Thomas died in 1771; he was 77.

27. George Buckalew. Born in 1698 in Perth Amboy, Middlesex Co, NJ. George died in Perth Amboy, Middlesex Co, NJ, on 3 December 1739; he was 41.

Alternate data: Birth year and place as 1693 in Scotland. Came to America in 1715 with his father Fredrick on the ship Caledonia, NJ Archives, Abstract of Wills, Vol. I, Nov. 10, 1739. Does not list a Susannah as one of his children..

A "husbandman" (farmer) and an overseer in 1724 (First Settlers of Ye Plantation, 1664-1714, p. 345).

Mentioned in his father's will as a "yeoman" and as having received a legacy by deed, "given 23 July 1725 a tract of land and meadow on Cheesequake Creek for consideration of love, goodwill and affection which is born toward said son." (Secretary of State's Office, Trenton, NJ, Liber G-2 pp 163-165). This was recorded 4 July 1749. The name of the wife was Sara and she is identified in 1749 as widow of George and mother of James (Middlesex Co., NJ, Deeds. Liber G-2, p. 165).

1739, 10 Nov, Will; Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, NJ: Names of wife and children included. Referred to as "yeoman (a freeholder below the gentry) of Perth Amboy" and mentions his eldest son, Richard, to have land on Back Creek, his son, "Jeams," and three sons, George, Jonathan and William, ten pounds each, wife Sarah "Bokelow" and three daughter, Prescillah, Susanna and Sary and also leaves to his son Richard four head of cattle and a sorrel mare. His wife Sarah and brother Williams are to be executors. The will was probated 3 Dec 1739. He signed his own name to his will as "George Buckalew" (Archives of NJ, Vol 30, p 72).

Witnesses --- William Melvin, Joseph Hall, N. Everson. Proved Dec. 3, 1739.

1748, 8 Jan: James Bokelew of Middlesex County, NJ, with the advice and consent of his mother Sarah Bokelew, Widow of George Bokelew of Middlesex County to Peter Bokelew, Sr., yeoman, of the same place for 69 pounds 8 shillings, sells a 98 acre tract. It was land lying on the north side of Cheesequake Creek and on the easternmost side of land belonging to Phredrick Bokelew, Sr., it began at a stake at the edge of the creek...(Secretary of State's Office, Trenton, NJ. Liber G-2, p 165.
1748, Freeholders list of "First Settlers of Ye Plantation, 1664-1714": 357 & 358: Listed Buckalews are Francis, Frederick, John, George, Peter and William. We know it was not George of Frederick and Mary though it may have been his son.

I know Gerry Green seemed to think that when Frederic Buckelew (1676-1754) wrote his will in 1753 that when he listed his son George in the Will that he was still alive and feels that this was a different George that died in 1739. I could interpret this to mean that he wanted the family of George to know that the land he had left to George still belonged to them and unlike the land of William, also deceased, would not be sold. Who really knows?

I have found a lot of Dutch names on various passenger lists, but nothing that sounds like Buckelew. Still looking!

In 1717 when George was 19, he married Sarah, in Cheesaquakes, Middlesex Co., NJ. Sarah died in 1748.

1741, Aug Term, Supreme Court Case, Middlesex Co., NJ: In the narration in the Trespass case, Sarah Buckaloe, by her att'y, Fenwick Lyell, complains that John Courtney, 1740, came to her house at Perth Amboy and deflowered her daughter, Priscilla Buckaloe, rendering her with child. Sued for fifty pounds damages.

Identified in her father's will as married and having children. Perhaps she was the mother of the four children with surname Langton.

29. Peter M Buckalew. Born in 1702 in Middlesex Co, NJ. Peter M died in 1780; he was 78.

"History of North Brunswick" Entry for 1746: Early settler Peter Buckelew buys land from Joshua Smalley on the north side of Lawrence Brook (Farrington Lake) and establishes a farmstead on Old Georges Road (154 acres).   Entry for 1776: Frederick Buckelew, son of Peter Buckelew, serves in the N.J. Militia with Capt. Morgan under Gen. George Washington during the Revolutionary War, and is buried in Buckelew Family Cemetery in 1793 near the farmstead of Old Georges Road.

Identified in his father's will as having a son, John Buckalew, who has a wife, Mary, with a daughter named Jeane Jones.

1783, 8 Mar, Middlesex Co., NJ; Inventory of Estate of Peter Bucklew, Sr: Saml Neilson conducted the inventory & valued the estate at slightly over 379 pounds. Included were notes against Seth Ellison, Wm ??Cameron, John Bloodgood, Peter Bucklew, John Bucklew, Francis Lotts (I think this should be "Letts"), Peter Bucklew, Lazarus Wilson, John Everson & John ?tone. The will was probated on 26 Apr 1783. Samuel Neilson & Thomas Stillwill ack before M Hude, in New Brunswick, that they had witnessed the will; and Obadiah & Abram Buckelew were qualified to serve as Exex. Samuel Neilson ack he had conducted the inventory on 25 Feb 1785 before Robert Hude. Ref #6215-21L. From copy of orig available through Gerry Green., pp 231-232.

30. John Buckalew. Born on 14 February 1705 in Middlesex Co., NJ, Or Scotland. At the age of <1, John was baptized in 1705. John died in 1775; he was 69.

Other Records report he was born in Scotland

Yoeman.

Witnessed the will of his father-in-law.

1731, 25 Dec; Middlesex Co., NJ; Marriage: John Buckalew, Amboy, Yeoman, to Isabell Dove, of Lower Freehold, spinster. From Gen. Mag. of NJ, Vol 15, p 96, From Wm. Dobbins. [also NJ Archives, Vol. 22, p.36].

1762, 14 April: Possibly the John Buckalew of Middlesex Co., NJ, who married Hester Praal of Staten Island on this date. Would be a subsequent marriage for John.

1775, 5 June, Will (probated 6 Sep 1787) [NJ Archives, Vol. 35, p. 63]: Refers to him as a yeoman of Middlesex Co., NJ. His children are identified in the will. Left land "...for eldest sons Abraham, James and John. Son Thomas 80 acres of my farm. Son Samuel a farm near Inglishtown of 169 acres. Son Frederick, place where I live, and he is to support my wife. (to) Daughter Priscilla, a negro. Daughter Jane, a wench. Daughter Issable and my three grandchildren, the issue of my daughter Mary deceased, 100 pounds which I have against my son John." It is fascinating that they had come to America to avoid persecution and yet felt no compunction about owning a negro slave and an indentured servant who could be left as property in a will.

One source says that John was born in Scotland on 14 Feb 1705, acquired land as a young man. At age 26 he married Isabel Dove whose family had also come in 1715 on the Caledonia, a ship that carried hundreds of families from Scotland to America from 1674 to 1715. The remains of the ship were still visible in a river feeding the Raritan Bay as late as 1850.
