"It would be interesting to hear the stories of when, why and how the name got changed from Bucklew to whatever the spelling of the now researchers. Our family takes the spelling of Buckalew. The story goes that great grandpa Edgar O. Bucklew (1868-1939) went to work for the railroad and his supervisor said his name sounded like it should have an "a" in it, so the supervisor
wrote out his first check with that spelling and ever since, the family has carried on the Buckalew."

E-mail from Virginia on 9 Jan 1999: "...Edgar was a minsiter and had eight children, four sons and four daughters. Two of his sons grew to maturity. Roy Russell and Strauther Orlen were the two sons to have Buckalew descendants...."

From genealogical data sent to me 9 Jan 99 by Virginia Buckalew:

"As a young lad, he remembered working for ten cents a day and saving up the money to purchase a pair of shoes. He related to his granddaughter, Arnolda Workman, that his mother would wrap his feet in cloths, paper, or whatever was available to keep them warm. He did not come from an affluent family.

"As a young man, Edgar left Preston Co. and became round house foreman with the railroad at Bellair, OH. His employer said that the name Bucklew sounded as though it needed the 'a', hence the family adopted it and all his children and their descendants use the spelling BUCKALEW. This was told me by his daughter, Garnett Buckalew Proffitt.

"Edgar and his sister Clara married brother and sister. Emma and Robert See's parents were William and Margaret (Sayer) SEE.

"More about Edgar Oliver Buckalew: Bible record in the possession of grandson, Bacycle. Buried in Suncrest Cem. in Pt. Pleasant, WV. Occupation...railroad worker, farmer, and minister. Religion...Evangelical United Brethren.

On 28 September 1891 when Edgar Oliver was 22, he married Emma See, daughter of William See & Margaret Sayre, in Mason Co., WV. Born on 8 September 1866 in Mason Co., WV. Emma died in Mason Co., WV, on 28 March 1948; she was 81. Nickname: Emma.
