Copied from a "Welcome to The Bucklew Museum" sheet: "Items on display in the Bucklew Museum (Kingwood, WV) were collected by L.S. Bucklew with help from family and friends, some of whom were foreign missionaries.

"Mr. Bucklew was a resident of Kingwood and operated a cabinet shop. He displayed his collection in his home before he willed it to Preston County several years before his death in the early 1970s.

"The Museum was formerly housed in the old library on the third floor of the jail building. When the courthouse was renovated in 1974, the boiler room was eliminated and the room re-modeled to house the Museum. The Museum was designated as a Bicentennial project in 1976 and part of the items were moved to the new location that year. The balance of the collection was moved in 1977.

"The items in the collection were numbered by Mr. Bucklew in order as he collected them. Mr. Darwin Reese, custodian of the courthouse, was in charge of the Museum from 1976 until his retirement in 1986. Mr. Reese placed the items in display cases as they related to each other.

"Some items, such as Mr. Bucklew's youth coat, were in very fragile condition and are not on display, although they are still a part of the collection. Unfortunately, some of the articles have become lost or misplaced throughout the years, although the collection is completely intact sisce being moved to the Courthouse.

"Some items of particular interest to WEst Virginia residents are the enamel from a dinosaur tooth found in West Virginia (#136); and old Chinese rifle made in 1346 (#1) and arrowheads found in West Virginia by Mr. Bucklew (#261).

"The Museum is located on the first floor of the Courthouse and can be seen during regular Courthouse hours by request. The Museum is also opened for group tours if prior arrangements are made with the custodian." 6/86

1995, 28 Nov; Letter to Lester Trammell Buckalew: "I don't believe it would be worth your time to visit it (the Bucklew Museum". By our admission some of the articles have become lost or misplaced and I would add, possibly stolen. Better records would be perhaps in the court house or at the local newspaper, 'The Preston County Journal.' Most items in the museum appear to be artifacts. I visited the museum as a boy and later in 1949 when it was still in the Jail House next door to the Court House."

Leroy's father, Jehu, was a musician, one of the old-time fiddlers. Leroy learned, played and taught violin as a source of financial gain. As a collector of rare articles, one he accumulated was a real Stradivarius violen, which came from Europe and was once the property of the Royse family of Kingwood, WV. His mother died when he was eleven. He never married. ("Now and Long Ago, No. 5," 1996, Preston County Historical Society).
