1926, 20 July, Letter dictated by Steve Buckelew of Birmingham, AL, to his brother, R. G. (Robert G.), in Washington, D. C. (This letter ended up in the possession of Anna Buckelew Hanratty, the daughter of Robert G. Buckelew. According to the 1890 Jefferson Co., AL, census report, Stephen would have been born about 1869, and Robert G. was born in 1887.): "Dear brother -- We are fairly well, but 'oooh my!', it was 98 yeterday and hotter today. Plenty of dust and dry weather. They are paving streets and public roads in every direction making plenty of dust. If you were here now, we would make a trip to the river.

"Have not seen John in several days. I went to see Uncle Brewer to get information which you wanted but could not get it. I think that father was born in Clark County, south AL near Grove Hill. His father's name, as I remember was Abram. [Anna Hanratty states the name was William, not Abram. However, she is considering the possibility that one, or the other, could be a middle name.] It seems that all of them had a mania for Biblical names as far back as I can trace them. Our father's name was James C. Drew [Buckelew] -- the C. was placed there to designate some of his near relatives.

"Father's mother's maiden name was Ruthie Larymore. All came from SC. I don't know what part. Ruthie Larymore had a sister, Jane Larymore; father had a first cousin Jonathan Buckelew. Two brothers older than father named Abram and Aaron. The two younger were William and Andrew Jackson [Buckelew]. Three sisters; Mary, who married Micael Sheens, from Ireland. I don't know names of other two. They married Antleys -- either Irish or Irish descent. Uncle Brewer informed me that there was another Buckelew whose name he did not know, but they called him 'Granpap' who was a slave owner and died when uncle Brewer was a small boy. As I remember, my father had nephews about as old as he was -- they were scattered from South Alabama to Georgia, Tenn -- and Texas. Zebedee Buckelew of Lewisburg, AL, Ed's father, tells me that his grandfather was named James Buckelew from SC. Zebedee's father was Richard Buckelew, who settled in Coffee Co., AL. Perry Buckelew's father Abner J. and Zebedee were brothers . Zebedee is about second cousin to us. This is all I have now to tell on the Buckelew side.
"Will gather more and let you know later. Mother's people -- Brewers --her father was William Brewers; her mother's maiden name was Mary Allen. We have two great Uncles, [?} Reeves Allen, and Frank Allen. Our great grandfathers -- Allen's (name I don't know). He lived to be 105 years old -- died in TX. Moved there from neaqr Yellow Bluff, Wilcox Co., South AL.
"When 95 years of age he could mount a horse and ride miles and sing in the old four-note books.
"They were scattered to different parts of TX from what I learn. If I can take a trip to Cullman and find Callie Buckelew, the oldest of the cousins, I might get some desired information.
"This delay in replying to your letter has been caused by the slow gathering of facts about our family. I will send more as fast as I can get it, every few days possibly. Dr. Buckelew, Sulligent, AL, might be able to give some information. You can write him. Come. -- Your brother, Steve.
"Well, you, of course, know Steve's secretary, want to just add a line or two.
"When are you folks coming? We are looking for you, don't disappoint us. Nancy said 'In September,' Steve thought you would be here by this time (July) but since you're not, he is writing or dictating a letter. "We are glad you are coming -- let us know when to meet the train. "We won't have to tiptoe around this time. Steve has a day job, I'm happy to say.
"Hoping to hear at once that you and the family will be with us soon. With love to all, Your sis --Ida."
