Ninth Generation (Continued)

Family of Robert M. Buckalew (1576) & Sarah A.

2864. Mary Mahala Buckalew. Born on 24 November 1833 in Pike Co., AL. Mary Mahala died in Bandera Co., TX, on 27 February 1884; she was 50. Buried in Means Cemetery, Medina, Bandera Co., TX.

Buried in Means Cemetery, north of Bandera, TX...you have to know where to find the little lane that takes you to the ford across the North Prong of the Medina River, and then you have to have a key to open the gate to get to the pasture where it is.

The ancestor about whom Gerry Green wrote the book "Mary's People-- The Buckelews," her great-great-grandmother.

Mary, her sister, Martha, and brother, Frank--orphans all--had no place to go when their father, Robert, died in Cherokee County, TX, except to their Uncle Berry Buckelew's home in Bandera County. Soon after, Berry was killed by Indians, and a few short months later, Frank was captured by Indians. He was fortunate enough to escape 11 months later.

Mary had been married five times and had five children by three of her husbands. The 3rd husband was abusive to his step-children, thus the marriage ended in divorce. Her last husband was a ne'r-do-well and gambled away what little property Mary had managed to hang on to.
Only four husbands have been found, and no divorces.

1870, 30 Aug, Bandera Co., TX, Census: Husband Wm H. Finley had died in July of previous year. She is listed as head of family with five children from five months to 13 yrs. Two of the children were Hills, one a Campbell, and the last two were evidently Finleys.

1872, Bandera Co., TX; Tax Rolls: Mary was listed for 100 acres valued at $200 & and personal property valued at $300, consisting of 1 horse, 15 cattle & 10 sheep.

1874, Bandera Co., TX; Tax Rolls: B.C. Rose (Mary's new husband) listed for 100 acres valued at $200, and personal property valued at $464, consisting of 5 horses, 24 cattle, 6 sheep, etc.

On 1 April 1855 when Mary Mahala was 21, she first married Thomas M. Hill , Sr., son of George W. Hill, in Cherokee Co, TX. Born on 7 January 1833 in AL. Thomas M. died in ?TX in 1861/1863; he was 27.

Photo on p. 462 of Buckelew Traces, Issue 3. This handsome young man with fierce eyes is the first husband of the Mary Buckelew of the book "Mary's People..." He appears to be wearing his Civil War uniform--thus it was probably the last (if not the only) photograph taken of him. If he was the same Thomas Hill who had enlisted for the war in Fayette Co., TX, he ended up in a POW camp in IL. He may well have died there, too, because Mary Hill remarried in 1864. There descendants are charted on p. 103 of Mary's People--The Buckelews.

Frank, Robert M. Buckalew's son, is quoted in Mr. and Mrs. T.S. Dennis' book, "Life of F. M. Buckelew, The Indian Captive,": "...my father decided to move to Texas, as many of the old settlers of the eastern states had done, in hopes of getting more land, better locations and as he often expressed, 'more elbow room'."

Mary, her sister, Martha, and brother, Frank--orphans all--had no place to go when their father, Robert, died in Cherokee County, TX, except to their Uncle Berry Buckelew's home in Bandera County.
