On 28 October 1926 when Vardaman Moore was 24, he married Mary Gregg Locke, daughter of Simion Young Locke (8 September 1878-3 December 1910) & Anna Gets Quattlebaum (29 March 1881-23 January 1932), in Mobile, AL. Born on 3 December 1903. Mary Gregg died in Mobile, AL, on 8 January 1986; she was 82. Buried in Mobile, AL.

"Beloved wife of the late James Mallory Forbes. Loving mother of Edwin B. Forbes of Saratoga (sic) and the late James Mallory Forbes, Jr. Beloved mother-in-law of Douglass Wingo Forbes. Devoted sister of M. Roby Buckalew, Jr. of Merritt Island, Florida, M. Walker Buckalew of Delaware, Frances Henry of Georgia, and J. Edwin Buckalew of Arkansas. Caring grandmother of Katherine Anne Forbes and James Mallory Forbes, II.

"A native of LaFayette, Alabama. Age 88. Graveside services will be held Saturday, December 27, at 2:00P.M. at Elmwood Cemetery, Birmingham, Alabama. Rideout's Valley Chapel (205-879-3401) is directing."

Her brother, Meriwether Walker Buckalew wrote in a note which I (Les Buckalew) received 23 Mar 1998: "Juliette was never called Julia. Apparently my mother and father renamed her Juliette when she was a baby but never changed the entry in the family Bible. Her marriage certificate is Juliette."

On 21 June 1936 when Juliette Ann was 27, she married James Mallory Forbes , Sr., in Roanoke, AL. Born in Birmingham, Jefferson Co., AL.

Burial preceded by memorial service at Columbia Baptist Church, Falls Church, VA.

1975, March 28, Veterans Administration, Washington, D.C.: "IMMEDIATE RELEASE...

"Administrator of Veterans Affairs, Richard L. Roudenbush, today announced his appointment of Meriwether W. (Buck) Buckalew, 63, as Manager of Administrtive Services in the Veterans Administration's Central Office headquarters in Washington, D. C.

"Since July 1962, Buckalew has served as Assistant Manager of the service responsible for the publication and distribution to the agency's 58 regional offices, 171 hospitals and other field stations throughout the country of all VA forms and regulations, and providing support services, including office supplies and equipment, for the headquarters of the Federal Government's largest independent agency.

"A native of LaFayette, Ala., Buckalew served as a Social Security Administration field representative before entering the U.S. Army in July 1941. He was assigned to the Adjutant General's Office, serving in Atlanta, Ga., Washington, D.C., and in the Pacific Theater. Released from active duty in May 1946 with rank of Major, he is a retired Lieutenant Colonel in the Army Reserve.

"The new manager of VA's Central Office Administrative Service joined the agency in March 1946 as a Planning Officer in the Atlanta Regional Office. In 1956 he was transferred to VA's Winston-Salem, N.C. Regional Office as a Management Analyst Officer, serving there until July 1962 when he came to VA Central Office to take the position of Assistant Manager of Administrative Services.

"Buckalew attended Marion Military Institute in Marion, Ala., the U.S. Naval Academy, and the Birmingham, Ala. School of Law. In 1967 he completed the Masters Degree Program at George Washington University in our nation's capital.

"A member of American Legion Post 55 in Winston-Salem and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1830 in VA Central Office, Buckalew is also active in the First Baptist Church of Alexandria, Va., and presenty serves as Chairman of the Executive Church Council.

"Married to the former Frances Seroyer, the Buckalews have a son, Dr. M.W. Buckalew, Jr., who is a Professor at St. Lawrence University in Canton, N.Y.

"Mr. and Mrs. Buckalew live at 5599 Seminary Road in Falls Church, VA."

1979, Feb 16 Winston-Salem, N.C., Publication, by Bill East, Sentinel Staff Reporter: "VA OFFICER ENDING 43 YEARS SERVICE...

"One of the highest-ranking officials of the Veterans Administration ever to come from the regional office here will retire next week.

"Meriwether W. (Buck) Buckalew, 67, will leave his post as assistant administrator for administrative services--one of the key positions in the VA.

"Buckalew, who works out of the VA headquarters in Washington, has been responsible for the agency's centralized national printing program, the distribution of all printed fmaterial to VA facilities, and the design, production and presentation of exhibits, motion pictures, videotapes and television spot announcements.

"In the Washington office, he has been responsible for space management, security, procurement, control and distribution of supplies and equipment, mail, telephone and teletype, travel, records management, graphic arts and photography.

"'He has had a tremendously big job,' said Judson DeRamus, retired manager of the VA regional office here, under whom Buckalew worked for 12 years. 'But he is a tremendously talented and capable person.'

"Buckalew will have 43 1/2 years of federal service when he walks out of his office Feb. 23--one of the top service records with the VA (although not all of it was with that agency).

"He began federal service with the Social Security Administration in Baltimore in 1936. He entered the Army in July 1941, and after duty in the Pacific was released from active duty in May 1946, with the rank of lieutenant colonel in the Army Reserve.

"He joined the Veterans Administration at the branch office in Atlanta in 1946 and transferred to the Winston-Salem regional office in 1950 as chief of the administrative division.

"He served here in various supervisory positions, including administrative officer in the office of the regional director, DeRamus."

1986, April 23; Tennessee Baptist publication, by Bob Stanley, Foreign Missions News Service; re. the Foreign Mission Board election of officers:

"M.W. (Buck) Buckalew, a layman from Falls Church, Va., was elected first vice chairman, 40 to 31, over Howard Baldwin, a multimedia evangelist from Richmond, Va. The other two officers, Claude Kirkpatrick of Baton Rouge, La., second vice chairman, and Mary Dalton of Asheville, N.C., recording secretary, were elected by acclamation."

1989, March; VBH Today--Newsletter of Virginia Baptist Homes: "Trustees Elected..."

The article pictures the welcoming of seven new Trustees following their election at the Annual Meeting of Virginia Baptist Homes held on Tuesday, December 6, 1988. The first named is Meriwether W. Buckalew whose hand is being shaken by Chairman of the Board, Hunter Riggins.

The Board is "...composed of 36 laymen and ministers. These trustees share with Virginia Baptist Homes their abilities acquired through denominational service and expertise in business. Mr. Riggins expressed appreciation for the willingness of the Trustees to give their time in service through the ministry of the Homes as it serves 792 residents residing in the retirement communities in Culpeper, Newport News, and Richmond."

1998, Mar 10, 10:30 a.m.: Received phone call from Meriwether Walker Buckalew. Material that I had given to Lindsey Buckalew had been passed to him, and he was very interested in the Buckalew genealogy project. Will send me his descendant information. The following includes excerpts from the obituary that appeared 14 March 2000 in The News Journal, Wilmington, Deleware:

Meriwether Walker Buckalew. Age. 88, of Wilmington, DE, died of complications of congestive heart failure while on vacation in New Smyrna Beach, Florida, on Feb. 27, 2000. Mr. Buckalew was born in Lafayette, AL on Nov. 3, 1911, the son of Marion Roby Buckalew and Julia Moore Buckalew.

A graduate from Marion Military Academy, Marion, AL, Mr. Buckalew's formal education included studies at the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis, MD, Birmingham School of Law, Birmingham, AL and George Washington University, Washington, DC, from which he received the Masters degree in Government Administration.

In July 1941 he entered active duty with the United States Army as a Second Lieutenant. Serving with distinction throughout World War II, he received numerous awards, honors, commendations, decorations and promotions, and served overseas in the Pacific theater of operations. He was released from active military duty in May 1946 in the rank of Major, and attained the rank of Lieutenant Colonel after serving twenty-two more years in the U.S. Army Reserves.

In 1946 he began a career with the veterans Administration as Planning Officer at the VA Regional Office in Atlanta, GA. In 1950 he was transferred to the Regional Office in Winston-Salem, NC, and served as Management Analysis Officer and Assistant Manager until 1962. Already a consultant to the VA Central Office in Washington, DC, he was transferred there to become Assistant Manager of Administrative Services. Later promoted to Manager of Administrative Services, he was subsequently appointed Assistant Administrator for Administrative Services, in which capacity he served until his retirement in 1979.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years, the former Frances Seroyer; a son, Dr. Meriwether Walker Buckalew, Jr., also of Wilmington; four grandchildren, two step grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Surviving siblings include Roby Buckalew of Merritt Island, FL, Edwin Buckalew of Van Buren, AR, and Frances B. Henry of Bainbridge, GA.

A Memorial Service was held at Columbia Baptist Church, Falls Church, VA on Mar 10 followed by a burial with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Westminster Presbyterian Church of Wilmington.

On 1 July 1933 when Meriwether Walker was 21, he married Willie Frances Seroyer, daughter of John Seroyer & Lena Ussery, in Opelika, AL.
