Eleventh Generation (Continued)

Family of Rev. Clifford Cornelius Buckalew (4755) & Mamie Corinne Trammell

7164. Henry Douglas Buckalew. Born on 13 January 1924 in RFD, Morrow, Clayton Co., GA. Henry Douglas died in Meridian, MS, on 6 February 1962; he was 38. Buried on 9 February 1962 in West View Cem., Atlanta, Fulton Co., GA.

Graduated from Jonesboro, GA, in 1941, and attended North Georgia Military College, Dahlonega, GA, during the 1941-2 academic year. Following that year at NGMC, he joined the US Navy as an aviation cadet. While awaiting a pilot-training slot to become available at a Naval facility, he learned to fly at Candler Field (later Atlanta International Airport) in the Civilian Pilot Training (CPT) program. Because of a dispute with the civilian administrators of CPT, and being that he was still in a somewhat tentative status with the Navy, he requested release from the program and his naval obligation. A few months later he joined the US Merchant Marines.

He spent the remainder of World War II as a crewman aboard merchant cargo vessels plying the submarine infested waters of the Atlantic Ocean to Italy, England, Russia and throughout the Pacific Ocean area.

Following the war, he married Jewell Roberts from Waycross, GA, and bought their first home in Hapeville, GA. He went to work in the Electrical Wholesale business, first with Luttrell Electrical, and subsequently with Electrical Wholesalers, Inc., Atlanta, GA.

Some time later, Doug Jewell bought a home in East Point, GA, and Doug began to work part-time with Westview Cemetery Properties, Inc. Eventually, he went full-time with the Westview company and managed and developed cemeteries in Sandersville and Brunswick, GA.

In the early 1960, Doug was made manager of the Westview Cemetery property in Meridian, MS. While there in Feb 1963, Doug lost his life in a tragic automobile accident.

Jewell and children, after a short time with Doug's parents in Stone Mountain, GA, moved to Savannah, GA, where they built a new home. One of their neighbor families in Savannah was Art Bunker, recently widowed, and his three sons.

In a year or so, these two families merged to the benefit and happiness of all families thereof.
