Simple Woodgrained Background

This simple background is made using PSP's Woodgrain paper texture.
  1. Open a new image that's 200 pixels wide and 200 high and that has a color depth of 16.7 million colors.
  2. Fill the background with a light brown/tan color.
  3. Choose a foreground color that is medium-to-dark brown, and then choose the Airbrush tool. In the Control palette, select 200 as the Size, Square as the Shape, and 50 as the Opacity. On the Tool Controls tab of the Control palette, select Woodgrain as the Paper Texure.
  4. Position the Airbrush in the exact center of the image. (Look at the position indications at the bottom left of the PSP window to make sure you're at 100, 100.)
  5. Without moving your mouse from the center position, click a few times until you have an effect you like. The woodgrain texture will show up in your foreground color, with the background color showing through "underneath".
  6. Use Convert to Seamless Pattern special effect to make a smoothly tiling image. Select an area within your image and then choose Selections | Convert to Seamless Pattern. If you get an error message, make a smaller selection further in from the image's edges and try again.

(Note: This works best with soft-edged textures such as Woodgrain but doesn't work well at all with the Brick textures. See Handmade Brick Background for instructions on making a brick background using the PSP paper texture Large Bricks.)
