The Netscape Palette

Click here for a zipped version of the PSP Netscape palette.

Whether using the Netscape palette will cause you problems or simply help reduce the size of your images depends on several things, including the numbers and kinds of colors in your image and the method of color reduction that you use.

Here are two sets of examples of what you can get:

coins coins, nearest color
Original
13K
Nearest color
5K
coins, error diffusion coins, maintain indexes
Error diffusion
7K
Maintain indexes
13K

kitty kitty, nearest color
Original
14K
Nearest color
6K
kitty, error diffusion kitty, maintain indexes
Error diffusion
9K
Maintain indexes
14K

What I did for these was take 256-color originals and then load the Netscape palette using the nearest color, error diffusion, and maintain indexes color reduction methods. If I'd used GIF Wizard instead, the results would probabaly have been a little better than what you see here. And, of course, if you start out a new image with the Netscape palette loaded, you'd probably create an image of very good quality.

You should definitely give the Netscape colors a try, either by loading the palette in PSP or by selecting the Netscape color versions that you can get with GIF Wizard and other free or commercial image optimizers.
