While researching the Bane family there has been different theories about where the Banes came from, the spelling of their name, and who they were descended from. There was mention that the Bane family is descended from royalty , but there was some dispute as to who the royal ancestor was. All did agree that they came from Scotland. I have been working on this, my paternal family line, for close to 30 years. Before he died, a cousin of mine had also been tracing our family and was most gracious in sharing his research with me. I have found the name spelled: Bain, Bane, Bayne, Benn, Been.

My research has been compiled from various sources including visiting and corresponding with historians and town and county clerks. With the miracle of the internet, I have found much information about the family and have met and corresponded with distant cousins. Although, I have not been able to verify all of my research, I feel that my Bane family is descended from Duncan II, King of Scotland (1093-1094 who was slain by MacBeth in 1094.

In this country the Bains (Bane) date back to ca 1700. Immigrant Hugh (Hugo) Bain is said to have been the first to come to this country from Scotland. The Columbia County Historical Society, House of History, Kinderhook, NY has done much research on the Bain family in and around Columbia County, NY, and they have a lot of information on file concerning one Hugh Bain. Tradition says that there were two, both called Hugh, they were cousins, and they both settled in Columbia County, NY. The one Hugh had been lost sight of, but the other Hugh raised a family of five sons and three daughters. Of their descendants, some stayed in the Columbia County area and others scattered far and wide.

Specifically where in Scotland Hugh Bain came from has not been pinpointed. One source said Perth, Scotland, one said Dingwall, Isle of Skye, Scotland and still another, said Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland. I tend to lean toward Dingwall because according to the history of what is now the Tulloch. Castle Hotel (http://www.tullochcastle.co.uk/) in Dingwall, Scotland, Banes owned and lived in Tulloch Castle for two hundred and fifty years, from 1513 to 1752. Another reason is that immigrant Hugh Bain's father, Roderick Bayne, died in 1687 shortly after Hugh was born ca 1685 in Dingwall, Isle of Skye, Scotland.

In 1715, immigrant Hugh Bain, married Elizabeth Schott (Scott), and so began this Bain/Bane family line in America. Although Elizabeth was of Dutch descent, she and her husband, Hugh, settled among the Palatines (Germans) on the east side of the Hudson River. Apparently, one Bain developed wanderlust and decided to leave the eastern part of New York state. The Bane (Bain) family migrated from Kinderhook, NY, up the Hudson River to the Mohawk Valley to Madison County, NY. One family migrated to Canada, where the name is found spelled "Benn." Eventually, Hugh Bain (descendant of immigrant Hugh Bain) and his wife Nancy Betsinger settled in Orleans County, NY. They had eight children. The spelling of their name became "Bane" shortly after they arrived in Orleans County. Hugh's parents, Peter and Charity Bain also came to Orleans County, but Peter eventually left his family behind to return to Lenox, Madison County, NY.

Due to the limitation of space and because I have compiled many pages of research, I am only including here the male line of descent leading to my father. I will not include all information that I have about those listed, and I will not include those who are still living. I caution people that not all information has been verified. As I said, I have compiled this research from many sources
