His character: Crowned with effulgent rays and traversing the heavens in a chariot drawn in early times by white swans, but later by four powerful steeds, glorious Sol is imaged by the visible Sun. He surveys all that is in the tangible and the hidden worlds, and those whom he inspires can proclaim truths which were before unknown. The rays of his crown are seven in number for his own light and that of the other wandering luminaries is, in essence, one. In his aspects healer this is significant: maladies governed by every planetary influence are under his healing and vitalizing overlordship. Spiritual Sol exemplifies for us an unconquerable power deny we see him set and rise again and from Winter he reappears in life-giving brightness every Spring. In this, as some mystics have perceived from ancient times, Sol shows forth for us not merely the round of birth and death in which spiritual evolution proceeds only slowly. Rather what is suggested is the immortal triumph of the Higher Self, which is to flood us with an illumination enduringly greater and more wonderful than our brightest previous noonday life: true regeneration.

His Character: The solar deity, named Babbar, "Shining One," is better known by his title of Shamash, "Sun." He is characterized by courage, justice and energy. Brilliant beams of golden light spring from his shoulders and sides, and he carries the key of the Gate of the East. In his chariot of the Sun he traverses the sky to the Gate of the West by day returning by night through the underworld. All-illuminating and all-seeing he is judge of an, and giver of knowledge through divination. Besides astrological computation and the ancient practice of examining the liver of a sacrificed animal, the soothsayers of Babylon employed mother divinatory system which was sacred to Shamash. After prayers to him for revelation of the future, on was poured on the surface of water and the shapes thus formed were interpreted. Shamash is represented In his chariot, or mounting the eastern hill with the key in his hand; or enthroned as judge, holding a scepter and the Ring of Divinity.
