My family traces back to Bulgaria through my grandmother, Ester "Tinche"(Confino) Benbassat (b. Sofia), and grandfather, Abraham "Albert" Benbassat (b. 1907, Khaskovo).

The community in Khaskovo. Founded during the reign of the Ottoman Empire, khaskovo was a tobacco center. According to Jewish tradition, the first Jews arrived in 1800 from the nearby city of Odrin. In 1835 the city received Jews that left Odrin following the big fire which ravaged the Jewish section that year. The first families to arrive that year were: Ritan, Perez, Bennun, Magrisso, Mitrani, Rodrig, Benbassat, and Pharchi. These remain the dominant families even during the reign of the third Bulgarian Empire. During the 1840’s the community synagogue was erected. The Jewish populace concentrated in a separate section of the city, it contained the synagogue and a school.

No further information is provided about the city and the Jewish populace within it until the arrival of Rabbi Franco in 1863. The Rabbi, who was collecting contributions, received 400 Piastrim from the local Jews. This suggests that rich and generous Jews were to be found in Khaskovo at the time. It is also safe to assume that the community was relatively large (approximately 246).

This category of last names is most peculiar and varied. In this particular case, Bassatt derives from the regional French word " Bassat ", derived as well from the Latin word " Bassus " that denoted a person of short legs. There are variants of the last name; Bassatt, Bassette, Bassat, Bassant and Bassart and Bassot.

Among the old references to this last name or its variants, one mentions the baptism of Dieudonne Bassat, son of Jean Bassat that took place on September 16, 1599 in Loromontzey, Meurthe and Moselle, France. Nevertheless, further investigations suggest that this last name has been registered in a date previous to above-mentioned. Other references, make mention to the baptism of Nicholas, son of Nicholas Bassat that was celebrated on April 28, of 1608 in Loromontzey, Meurthe and Moselle. The birth registry of Anne Bassat, daughter of Jean and Nicolle Bassat on February 29, 1647, in Moyen, Meurthe and Moselle. The Marriage of Catherine Bassart and Jean Baptiste Conq, that took place in Frolois, Meurthe and Moselle, on February 10, 1759. A remarkable carrier of this last name was the military official Jean Baptiste de Bassat, who flourished in 1705. The hereditary last names began to settle down in France in the XII century, nevertheless,it is not until the XVI century that this practice firmly settles down to enter all the general population.
