PAVILLON DE LA MER
PRECIS - Abstract, formalistic and site-less, Pavillon de la Mer is an exercise in strict bilateral symmetry and the sequencing of space -- an extended entry, an arrival (threshold) and an outlay of twin terraces with pools and trellage, plus a descending stair and a belvedere (climax) at / by the 'sea'.
SITE UNSEEN - The site-less nature of the design problem was transformed -- in the imagination -- into a proto-pavilion for accessing or approaching the 'sea'. The arrival, matching casinos, and saltwater pools provide the minimal elements of a provisional program while meeting the requirements of the spatial study. The stair, flanked by flowing water departs company with these upper resources and takes the visitor to the beach, beyond the pavilion. (Portland School of Art, c.1989)
