Recent, current and future activities of INRIK

On 11 - 13th September 2000, Centre for Rural Planning Studies, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia cooperates with INRIK will arrange regional seminar "RURAL SMALL AND MEDIUM SCALE INDUSTRIES IN THE GLOBALISATION ERA" in Skudai, Johore, Malaysia. 

On 26th April - 5 May 2000, INRIK will receive in Bandung the international travelling exhibition "Rainforest for Health', which currently touring Indonesia. The exhibition is sponsored by the Rainforest Medical Foundation (RMF). In December 1999, it was on show in Depansar on the island of Bali. In February 2000, the Java tour  began with a first show in Surabaya, which will be followed by a show in Yogyakarta in March. An INRIK committee is preparing for the exhibition's arrival in Bandung in April until May 2000. 

Indonesian Resource Centre for Indigenous Knowledge (INRIK) Padjadjaran University cooperates with PEMDA Kotamadya Bandung, KODAM III Siliwangi, PKK Kotamadya Bandung and Jurusan Biologi FMIPA UNPAD, will planning to a project Bio Intensive Gardening (BIG) in Bandung, with pilot project in kelurahan Jamika.  

Indonesian Resource Centre for Indigenous Knowledge (INRIK) Padjadjaran University cooperates with Yayasan Pertanian dan Pembangunan Berkelanjutan (YaPOPB) Jakarta other plans to conduct a study and documentation on various kinds of local knowledge and local agricultural technology of Kisam people in South Sumatra. INRIK  and YaPOPB) would also welcome enquiries from potential partner intersested in this activities.

On July 1999, INRIK is currently undertaking a project Medicinal Plants in Kasepuhan, Halimun, sponsored by CUSO-Indonesia

On 16th June, 1999 INRIK cooperate with Padjadjaran University has scientis popular  meeting  with two activity : Launching a new book intitle “Petani Merajut Tradisi Era Globalisasi” and “Workshop with  topic “Environmental Friendly and Sustainable Agriculture.” As a Keynote Speech in this meeting is Ir. Nelson Hutabarat (staff of Ministry of Agriculture). Aproximately , there are 150 person was coming to this meeting which from  the goverment, non goverment organization (NGO’s), reseracher, scientist, practice and the student.  This activities was declare by vice chancellor of Padjadjaran University. This book are compillatiion of some paper which wrote by reseracher and agricultural practicesl in Indonesia. This book edited by  Prof. Dr. Kusnaka Adimihardja. Another writer Drs Bagong Sunyoto (Yayasan Pertanian dan Pembangunan Berkelanjutan/ YaPOPB); Dr. Bustami Rachman  (Lecture at Jember University); Dra Savitri Dyah WIKR, M.A., and Dra Carolina, Msc., ( Researcher at Indonesian Institut for Science),; Dr  Herwasono Soedjito, ( Researcher at Herbarium Bogoriense), Msc., Drs I Made Legawa, MS., (Lecturer at Mahasaraswati University), Prof. Drs Indra Wuryatno, S.U., (Lecturer  at Sebelsa Maret University); Dr Sulaiman Mamar, ( Lecturer University of Tadulako); dan Dr Yunita T. Winarto, Msc., (Lecturer at FISIP University of Indonesia).             Workshop “Environmental Friendly and Sustainable Agriculture” attended  speakers : Johan Iskandar, Ph.D. (Lecturer at Biology Departement of UNPAD) with a paper in title “Agroforestry Rakyat, Pengelolaan Sumber Daya Alam yang Ramah Lingkungan dan Berkelanjutan : Studi Kasus dari Desa Kanekes; Rini Damayanti,dr.DCN and Dian Yuniawati from Yayasan “Pertanian Organik” Tidusany with a paper in title “Organic Farming : Healthly Plant which Environmental Friendly.”; Drs. Asep Syarif Hamdani from Pondok Pesantren Al-Itifaq with a paper in title “Pengalaman Pondik Pesantren Al-Ittifaq dalam Pemanfaatan Penggunaan Pestisida Organik di Bidang Pertanian”; Prof.Dr. Ir. Syamsudin Djakamijardja, M.Sc. and Dr. Ir. Rudi Priyadi M.S. from University of Siliwangi with a paper in title “Teknologi “PORASI” dalam Budidaya Pertanian Akrab Lingkungan (Organic Farming)”

From 6-8 May, INRIK participated in an exhibition, a seminar and a workshop in Jakarta (Indonesia) on the topic : "Memasuki abad 21:Antropologi Indonesia menghadapi krisis budaya bangsa (The Coming of the 21st Century : Indonesian Anthropology facing a National Cultural Crisis". It was held to mark the 30th aniversary of Jurnal Antropologi Indonesia, the Indonesian Journal of Cultural and Social Antrhopology. The celebration, which attracted some 300 visitors, featured books, photos, posters and audiuo visual material. INRIK showed 2 videos : "The Indigenous Agricultural System in Mount Halimun" and "The Cultivation of Sweet Potatoe: the local Technoloy Hui Cilembu". The INRIK stand also had on display representative books and photos, as well as information on its research projects. The seminars hosted 74 speakers from many different diciplines. One of the speakers was Professor Kusnaka of INRIK with a working paper entilted "Orang Baduy Manusia Air Penjaga Hulu Aliran Sungai Ciujung di Banten Selatan" (The Baduy People : Waterman Guard of the Upper Reaches of Ciujung river in South Banten. In May 1998, INRIK (Indonesian Resource Center for Indonesian Indigenous Knowledge) hosted a group consisting of interdicipline scientist from University Padjajaran and Bandung Institute of Technology, erecting IWIM (Interdiciplinary Working Group in Medicinal Plants) focusing on Biogeography (Prof.W.Erdelen), Antropology(Prof. Kusnaka Adimihardja), Pharmacocnosy (Prof. Sidik), and Phitochemistry (Dr.Moesdarsono).

On 24-25 April 1999, INRIK held a participatory rural appraisal (PRA) training for staff who will be taking part in its Medicinal Plants project in Kasepuhan. The training was given by Mrs. Esti, a freelance trainer who studied the PRA approach with Robert Chambers in India. The project it self is sponsored by Canadian University Services Overseas - Indonesia.

 

Marc Clemens, a volunteer from CUSO Canada, returned to Canada on 8 March 1999 after two years with INRIK. During that time, Mr. Clemens participated in all INRIK activities; he took a special interest in a project on orgainic farming , and also taught English to members of the INRIK staff. 

INRIK has now published the proceedings of the workshop, "Indigenous Knowledge Systems and Development", held on September 14, 1998 in Bandung. Prof. Dr. Kusnaka was a facilitator at a National Congress of Traditional Communities, March 15-22 in Jakarta. This meeting is being organized by Telapak Foundation (Yayasan Telapak) and ELSAM (Lembaga Studi dan Advokasi Masyarakat).

Prof. Kusnaka was a facilitator at a regional meeting of traditional ('Adat) communities in Java, which was held in Bogor on 9-12 February 1999. The meeting is being organized by Telapak Foundation (Yayasan Telapak), LATIN (Lembaga Alam dan Tropika Indoneia, and YLBHI (Yayasan Lembaga Bantuan Hukum Indonesia) as preparation for the National Congress of Traditional (Adat) Communities, which was held on 8-14 March 1999 in Jakarta.  

On February 7-9, an INRIK staff member was speaked at a workshop entitled "Indigenous Knowledge and Local Widsom", to be held in Yogyakarta and organized by Yayasan Semesta Biru. 

INRIK is currently undertaking a project to map the customary land of the Kasepuhan people. The kasepuhan have lived and farmed in the mountain region for centuries. The aim of the mapping project is to clarify land-management issues that affect the Kasepuhan, whose traditional lands overlap with areas for which other players also have plans : the perhutani the national forestry company, and the Mount Halimun National Park designated in 1992.

 

INRIK is currently preparing a training program for non government institutions and other institutions interested in undertaking research on Indigenpous Knowledge Systems in Indonesian, especialy in the Eastern part of Indonesian 

INRIK would welcome enquiries from potential partners interested in doing research on ethnomedicine and the cultivation of medicinal plants in the Mount Halimun area, West Java.
