Science, Religion, Unificationism

These pages will explain my journey through the worlds of science, religion and their unification. I will attempt to show how, with pure logic and reason, we can have a common base in our quest for knowledge, whether our aproach be scientific or metaphysical. Finally, you can see what others have said on these subjects.

Science

Science has always amazed me. Theories and discoveries, from quasars to nature to quarks. Even as i became interested in areas which science doesn't deal with directly, i always found a way to explain things to myself in a materialistic way. Even the extraordinary things i felt while actively practicing Yoga and Tai-Chi-Chuan could not shake my faith in materialism.

But, Occam's Razor is ruthless, and the day finally came when i had to admit the world (and even the science itself) are not simply materialistic.

Religion

Being educated in a comunist country, i was taught that religion is the way in which primitive people were trying to explain things which they could not understand with their undeveloped reason. Later, as science was developing, the religion had to step back little by little, and today it is finally completely proven wrong. I still remember my shock when i realized that some of my high-school friends were going to church, even though they were smart and in no way 'backward'.

But if we observe the issue objectively, primitive people had primitive religion and primitive science, and in time they all developed (people and science and religion).

The reason for the existence of these two different spheres is the existence of two different aspects of things - internal and external, or spiritual and physical.

Unification

If we observe things from only one aspect, we will be like the people who try blindfolded to describe an elephant. One would grab elephant's nose, another one his leg, and another one who knows what :-) And then they would be expected to have a meaningful dialog...

Every aspect has it's place and purpose, but we also need to be aware of others. So, we need a higher perspective which can unite various ideologies, religions and theories by lifting them to a higher plane.

I found that perspective in the Divine Principle and the Unification Thought. And you can read our story to see how i found them.

What others have said

Here is something very exclusive. It's an introduction to unfinished book by Richard.C.Lewis, dear friend and fellow Unificationist. He has been writing on this subject for years in various magazines.

In the end, here are some quotes which clearly show that some of the greatest scientists saw no conflict between true religion and true science:

Now, even though the realms of religion and science in themselves are clearly marked off from each other, nevertheless there exist between the two strong reciprocal relationships and dependencies. Though religion may be that which determines the goal, it has, nevertheless, learned from science, in the broadest sense, what means will contribute to the attainment of the goals it has set up.

Also, science can only be created by those who are thoroughly imbued with the aspiration toward truth and understanding. This source of feeling, however, springs from the sphere of religion. To this there also belongs the faith in the possibility that the regulations valid for the world of existence are rational, that is, comprehensible to reason. I cannot conceive of a genuine scientist without that profound faith. The situation may be expressed by an image: science without religion is lame, religion without science is blind.

Albert Einstein

...From the dawn of history until today, human beings have ceaselessly searched for the truth with which to overcome both types of ignorance [internal and external] and attain knowledge. Humanity through religion has followed the path of searching for internal truth, and through science has followed the path of seeking external truth. Religion and science, each in their own spheres, have been the methods of searching for truth in order to conquer ignorance and attain knowledge. Eventually, the way of religion and the way of science should be integrated and their problems resolved in one united undertaking; the two aspects of truth, internal and external, should develop in full consonance. Only then, completely liberated from ignorance and living solely in goodness in accord with the desires of the original mind, will we enjoy eternal happiness...

...Where is science heading? Until now, scientific research has not embraced the internal world of cause; it has limited itself to the external world. It has not embraced the world of essence, but has limited itself to the world of phenomena. However, science today is entering a new phase. It is compelled to elevate its gaze from the external and resultant world of phenomena to the internal and causal world of essence. The scientific world has begun to recognize that science cannot achieve its ultimate goals without a theoretical explanation of the causal, spiritual world...
