I am a member of the Northern Virginia Astronomy Club. Check our website for information about amateur astronomy in the Northern Virginia / Washington DC metro area. Another good site for amateur observing information is the Regulus online Newsletter.
Anyone interested in buying a first telescope MUST check out this FAQ for first time telescope buyers!
Anyone interested in buying used astronomy equipment should check out Astromart!
Anyone interested in buying a serious telescope should check Todd Gross' Weather / Astronomy webpage. Todd has very good reviews of telescopes and eyepieces which can take some of the guess-work out of a first time purchase….
For anyone interested in serious deep sky observing, I can recommend the "Adventures in Deep Space" webpage , the Deep Sky Astronomy webpage, or the Interactive NGC Catalogue online.
On the other hand, for the planetary observer on a budget, Luis' Affordable Refractors site is a must visit.
Want to try your hand at building your own telescope or accessories? Gotta check out the Amateur Telescope Makers (ATM) Archives.
Ok, so you've got a telescope, binoculars, eyes or etc. - now where does a beginner start? Check out the Astronomy Magazine website, or the Sky and Telescope magazine page.
I've never
been able to decide on that one perfect telescope, so I use four - a 4"
Celestron C102 flourite refractor, a 6" Celestron newtonian reflector,
and an 8" Schmidt - Newtonian, all on a modified Vixen Super Polaris mount,
and an old Meade 2080B 8" Schmidt / Cassegraine on a fork mount. I also
use two pairs of astronomical binoculars, Fujinon 10x70s and 16x70s. I
will gladly respond to any questions
about any of this equipment.
I am an amateur
primarily interested in observing. This page is new and under construction,
but check back for more astronomy oriented links and pictures of the equipment
I use.
