The Gupta kings patronised Nalanda. Some of its most famous patrons are Ashoka and Harshavardhana, who built some of the impressive temples and monasteries.
Amid the ruins of the university, only a few of the temples survive largely unscathed. Though dwarfed by the massive structures that remind modern students of their stylish university buildings, the temples speak of Buddhist art and sculpture at its peak. Human figures, and stories from Buddha's life have been painstakingly created on these walls.
Most of the sculptures have been removed from the campus and kept in the Nalanda museum nearby. Hopefully, this will prevent the vandals, the thieves and the weather from destroying the beautiful sculptures of this once-grand place.
