Jazakallah With Duas and Salaams posted on behalf of Maqbul Rahim Acting Moderator for ABDG-A ........................................ Question: Why does it seem in the holy Qur'an that some verses have apparently unrelated material stated together? Specifically, in the verse 3 of sura Al-Ma'eda, in the middle of the hokm for edible meat, we read: 'Al-yawm akmalto lakom deenakom wa atmamto alaikom ne'mati wa razito lakomol-eslama deena,' which is related to Al-Ghadeer. I know the Prophet (PBU Him & His Family) ordered that the Quran be recorded as we see it today and we may not know all its aspects for now. But has a reason been stated for this arrangement of the above verse? ........................................ Answer: In The Name Of The Most High; Since the Quran was revealed for all times and all situations, it's verses confirm to a logical concept called "Jari". "jari" means that the verse, or a statement applys to various situations. If you refer to tafseer books by known Ulama, they explain many a hadith which is narrated regarding a verse as tafseer al jari. Take for example the verse in surat Al-maedah..The verse does apply to the penal code being conveyed, but it was revealed at the most complying and conforming situation possible to the verse..i.e. announcing that Imam Ali(A.S) is the Prophet's heir. You will also find the verses of the Quran are grouped according to subject. Any Chapter of the Quran will contain at least one group, and many cases more than one that discuss a certain message. You will find that a single verse, in most cases, sums up the message. Examples are: Innahu min Sulaimana wa innahu Bismillahi Arrahmani Arrahim in Chapter Annaml verse 31, this verse sums up Sulaiman's letter to the queen. Similarly verse 33:33 sums up the call for adequate behavior by the Messengers wives and the purpose of such behavior. And so on. Therefore, if you place careful attention to groupings of verses, such misconception about verses being out of order will go away. I encourage you to read Tafseer Al-Mizan for it covers the Quran from many aspects. I also encourage you to learn Arabic and apply it to the Quran as much as you can. Allah Knows Best. Abu Mohammed
