	The following question on the recitation of the Qur'an for a deceased

QUESTION:

Salaamun Alaikum,

What does this term "Qur'an Khani" ``mean'' - in reference to a Marhum?

I understand it refers to the recitation of the Qur'an for one who has
desceased, but what is the significance of it, and from where did this
practice come from??

A friend of mine (non-Shi'ah) recently said that this was a Bid'ah - and
I want to know if this is a Bid'ah - possibly from both a Shi'ah and if
possible, a Sunni perspective.


ANSWER:

Salaamun 'Alaykum,

Qur'an Khani refers to a place where the Qur'an is recited. At such
places, the Qur'an is recited for the thawab of a deceased person. This is
an act which is accepted by both Sunnis and Shi'as, I have seen Sunnis
attend Qur'an Khanis. Infact, whenever we recite Sura al-fatiha or Yasin
for a marhum, this is also a form of Qur'an khani because a Qur'anic verse
is recited. 

The significance is that the marhum gets the reward because it is for
him/her an act of piety is performed. Any pious act in the name of a
deceased (e.g. building hospital, providing water to those deprived,
reciting the Qur'an so as to feel closer to Allah) is spiritually
significant for the marhum. 

May be you should ask your Sunni friend how can the recitation of the
Qur'an in memory of a deceased person be bid'a? Don't they recite sura
al-fatiha in memory of a deceased person?
