Rationale

The aim of the New Zealand Centre for Chinese Studies, set up in 1994, is to promote understanding between English-speaking New Zealanders and Chinese-speakers everywhere. It seeks to provide reliable information on things Chinese, on China and other Chinese-speaking regions to English-speaking New Zealanders, and to provide Chinese-speakers with information about New Zealand.

Nowadays, the importance of the Chinese-speaking areas of the world to New Zealand no longer needs to be argued. However, misunderstanding about China and Chinese attitudes is still widespread. To try to reduce the number and the extent of these areas of misunderstanding, the centre concentrates of three main activities:

  1. The provision of educational services.

  2. Publishing

  3. Teaching of language and culture

  4. Other activities

    1. arranging short-term courses and seminars for other groups and organisations on Chinese language and/or culture

    2. correspondence courses

    3. providing tutors in other languages
