Downton is an agricultural village located in the county of Wiltshire, situated in South-Central England near the New Forest, a park set aside by William the Conqueror in 1066 for the royal hunt.
It is located in the Avon river valley in the south part of the county, near the bordering county of Hampshire. It is 8 miles south of the historic cathedral city of Salisbury. It is 20 miles from Stonehenge.
The village is believed to have been founded in the 1200s, although the area has probably been inhabited since Roman times.
