MILLENNIUM MAN'S PHILOSOPHY

We are about to enter a new millennium of man, a world in confusion, tossed with hate, anger and wrought with ludicrous ironies. Millennium Man's philosophy is simple, to restore the respect each man deserves and bring down all the inane standards by which the dreaded 90s were a trademark.

POLITICAL CORRECTNESS

Politically correct has become the most overly used oxymoron in the English language during the pallid 90s. This idiom is an oxymoron because the world knows that anything and everything political is cast in a shadow of deception, greed, and self-serving dishonesty that has nothing to do with anything that can be described as correct. When we read in the newspaper, for example, or heard the news on TV relate the story of Det. Furman during the OJ Simpson trial, reporters told the story how he used the "N" word when describing blacks in Los Angeles. This type of reporting is not only childish but betrays the freedom of the press. The fact that Furman called the subjects of his precinct niggers truly described the narrow-minded bigotry that he had been brought up with. When the news services refused to use this word, nigger, they not only looked stupid, but they took the driving racist effect out of a story about a very sick policeman, one who has taken an oath to serve and protect all people within his jurisdiction. Millennium Man could never agree with the subject matter of the story (see bigotry) but will strive to see that the word, used in this context, is totally correct.

In the workplace, any person who completes a validated apprenticeship in a craft union becomes a journeyman. This has long carried a tradition of excellence and workmanship, something for which any man or woman should feel proud. To attempt to change this word to journeyperson is not only comic, but a disruption of the apprenticeship philosophy and cheapens the course of study accomplished by anyone who has succeeded in this type of endeavor.

Millennium Man scoffs at all this political correctness. Let a man be a man and a woman be a woman. May they work and play together under the same conditions and forever enjoy the competition and camaraderie in their workplace, without all the politically correct baggage.

It may take some yeoman work,
but politically correctness can be endured and overcome in the millennium.

OBSCENITY

Far be it for any man to decide what is obscene to another. Millennium Man knows in his heart that the pain and grief the Serbs have dealt with the many peoples of the Balkan peninsula is clearly the most obscene act that one people can endure from the hands of an aggressor. And it's equally plain to understand that the Serbs think the same of us. In another vein, mere words that describe the lively sexual relations between two beautiful people are buried in guilt and shame. Likewise, for a man to savor the female body in any way, shape, or form is not obscene at all but a natural longing for female companionship. And heaven forbid the woman who has lusted for that male thing.

By and large, the only obscenity in the confines of America, as we know it today, is for one man or a body of men to decide what is and what is not to be considered obscene and what will and will not be acceptable to the public eye. The founders of this magnificent country knew this and considered the freedom each man has to portray his thoughts and speech in such a way that no other can deny. This first freedom, the first bill of our inalienable rights, is being torn asunder more ways each and every day, in the congress, in the television studio, and in the domains of our schools.

Millennium Man believes in the rights of all Americans to a freedom of choice. In the twenty-first century, he will strive to make safe the rights of each American to enjoy the literature, music, and images of his or her choice. Never will our 21st Century man deny the right of anyone to this, but moreover, will defend and fight to keep this precious right alive and viable for his descendants to come.

For any man to abandon this first freedom, will not only betray our ancestors but open the doors for the totalitarian right to emerge and snuff this freedom from our life.

SPIRITUALITY

The passing millennium has been a thousand years of discovery, as man climbed out of the dark ages and entered into an age of thought and exploration. New spiritual ideas spawned the Reformation and the quest for religious freedom opened the world to pilgrimages of varying factions, myths, and creeds.

It is not the intent of this essay to praise or put down any particular religion, faith, or tradition. It is our intent to try and understand the spirituality that binds the world to itself and the billions of people and species who dwell in it together.

Man has survived millennia, not only because of his individual beliefs, but in spite of them. How many tribes, sects, societies have been annihilated because of religious differences? We have been quarreling and killing for thousands of years because we let our faith of god become our politics and our greed for proliferation of our beliefs turn us into warriors who taint the intent of the message from god. We convert those who can be won over and destroy those who won't buy into it.

John Lennon once said "God is dead," and the statement created a furor of criticism and hate. He later apologized to the world but in his heart he knew what he meant. He knew god as the spiritual face that is on every thing. Lennon felt god in his work and most important, in his attitude and love for his fellow man. John Lennon knew god in this way and lived his faith as he knew it. . . with a small 'g'.

Millennium Man believes we are all products of our faith . . . to understand our legacies we must find the spiritual force that is in each of us and live it. Only then will we put greed and hate behind us. And it's not a new concept. . .

"One thing we know, which the white man may one day discover. Our God is the same God. You may think now that you own Him as you wish to own our land -- but you cannot. He is the God of man and His compassion is equal for the red man and white. The earth is precious to Him and to harm the earth is to heap contempt on its Creator. The whites too shall pass, perhaps sooner than all other tribes. Continue to contaminate your beds, and you will one night suffocate in your own waste."

--Excerpt from a letter written in 1854 by Chief Seattle to President Franklin Pierce.

The future is upon us. Become part of the universal solution. Get your head together with anything that suits your direction and move on it. . . time's a-waistin'.
