This website began as an idea for end-of-year projects for my ninth grade English class. I was desperate for a neat idea that would hold the kids' attention while helping them learn. It has since blossomed into a full fledged gallery of student work.
By far, the most impressive aspects of the site are the student designed webpages. Each group had to develope the content and basic layout of a website that would either inform or instruct. They had to limit their topics to something that we had learned during our weeks together. I was very pleased with the outcome. While we didn't have the time or resources available for my students to create their own graphics or perform the actual creation of each page, I think what you'll find here is a true representation of what my students had in mind. All of the graphics were provided by me, but the content of each site came solely from my kids. I know you'll enjoy them.
I am a first year teacher and the mother of two toddlers, so free time is not something that I have a lot of. I hope this site will show you that anyone can bring this kind of technology and fun into their classroom. With all of the webpage building programs available today, you don't even have to know HTML to create a fabulous site. I am a firm believer that our children should be encouraged to think "virtually" and that technology is an excellent tool (but only a tool - not a cure-all) for classrooms. In fact, I've found that when my students become aware that only the best work will be published online, their performance improves and their interest in the activity increases.
If you would like to know more about our student website project, or would like some help getting started on your own classroom site, I am happy to help, provide excellent links to tutorials, and can even help create custom graphics (if you ask nicely). I hope we encourage a lot more of you to join us on the Web.
