A YOUNG PERSON'S MAP OF PREVEZA: POINTS OF INTEREST

Summary

Fifty lower- and upper-secondary school pupils in Preveza were asked to indicate on a sketch map of their town what they considered to be the most interesting, central or beautiful features and briefly explain the reasons of their choice. The selected features have been entered on the map and the accompanying observations analysed in terms of the vocabulary used. Apart from the town centre, the built up area as a whole, including their own neighbourhoods, schools, churches and streets aroused far less interest than features associated with leisure and sports or areas of natural beauty, with preferences varying characteristically according to age and gender. The pupils were also asked to estimate the scale of the map which few of them --mainly upper-secondary school boys-- were able to do. From this, it may be concluded that the teaching of geography and cartography could help to enhance significantly school pupils' awareness of the urban environment. Clich here for full text in Greek
