Disclaimers: I trust Tuchman to have her facts right, but I've deprived them of context, so be careful with your interpretations. The other sources were already hanging on a thin thread of context when I found them. This document shouldn't be taken as a substitute for serious research, or even for reading, say, A Distant Mirror, which is a damn good book. I like to think I have a better than average layman's knowledge of economics and history, but by training I'm a technoscientific barbarian.
