Here at Burks Elementary we are using technology on a daily basis. All our classrooms are equipped with multimedia computers with Internet access, and software that enhances our curriculum.
Our youngest learners, PPCD,begin to use
computers with age appropriate software.
In our BELT program, Kindergarteners join with PPCD using computers in
centers. Multimedia and application software is our focus.
In first
grade, young learners use software that enhances basic skills, multimedia
software, the Internet, and even have "Keypals". To encourage use, students have access to two multimedia computers in classroom.
Second and Third graders begin to use word processing skills, make books,
movies, use the internet and multimedia presentations. One second grade classroom is
our "ITA" class. This is a specially equipped classroom, to model a proposed classroom for the beginning
of the 21st century. It contains a total of five computers. These include a Destination system that is available for shared use
with the entire campus. The other classrooms each contain two multimedia computers. In addition, these classrooms have a Learning Lab that provides drill and practice.
Fourth and Fifth grades advance to more involved multimedia software,
word processing, keyboarding, and publishing skills. Educational software
also compliments their curriculum. Internet is used routinely. To allow
more computer time per child, each of the 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade classes have 3 mulimedia
computers!!!
Music, speech, and resource classes are not left out.
These "Specials", too, utilize computers on a daily basis.
All classrooms are provided with projection devices to enhance
their computer use. Color and laser printers are available.
The library houses 6 multimedia computers for student use.
These are equipped with word processing and multimedia presentation
software, as well as various reference software. Library supported software is
also available to the students within their classrooms, via our network.
A Josten's lab is shared by Kindergarten and Resource classes. This lab accomodates
20 students, with two at each computer. Basically a drill and practice lab, students also learn
keyboarding and take advantage of word processing capabilities.
A mulitmedia lab is located near the library. It contains 27 multimedia machines. Two printers,
and a scanner are available there, as well. Teachers schedule their classes to utlize the internet,
word processing and multimedia applications.
A multimedia computer equipped with graphic production software is
available in our Community Room, for use by our teachers and volunteers.
Finally, a computer on wheels equipped with presentation and publishing
software, a scanner and video-conference camera is available for check out
by any teacher in the building.
Classrooms also have designated computers that are used exclusively
for our popular Accelerated Reader program.
Our newest technology project is an exciting one! We are currently beginning a telecommunication project with the students that will involve the use of our video conferencing equipment. Students will work together on projects, research, or on line tutoring!
