SOUL
Oh, soul, you have been called so many names,
But, then, should one as old as life, be by fewer known?
Wizard of will, Merlin of intellect,
Timer of heartbeats, conjurer of sentiment,
Magician of genius, exploration's fire.
Enigmatic dynamo of health and heredity.
Planner of purpose, thinker of thoughts,
Loadstone of wonder, sorceress of dream and delight.
Throne of emotion, spirit of memory,
Gavel of guilt.
Driver of motion, hologram of consciousness,
Ghostly keeper of force, candle of wisdom and wit,
Heart of mystery, seat of sensation,
Essence of quest.
No wonder you are deemed immortal stuff,
For you are life turned back upon itself, a synonym for God.

SEARS TOWER - UNDERGROUND
Young doctor friend
In polished Porsche
Zips an after dinner quick Chicago tour.
At the stoplights,
Sunroof open,
I look up at stacks of windows
Shrinking as they run to sky.
Then,
He says he knows a shortcut
Back to Oak Park's shaded softness.
Five mile tunnel -
Big steel fortress -
Atlas shoulders arched against
The thick gray volume up above.
Along the walls lean cardboard condos -
Thin comfort when November starts its blow.
There,
They loiter -
Would-be patients,
Skeletons with sunken eyes.
Bad teeth munch on foodbank handouts.
Crooked feet
That shuffle on in laceless tennis shoes.
Layered, Goodwill, wine stained, almost clothes.
His eyes set on the straight ahead,
He shares with me his next years secret salary.
"A third of a million - wow - just think of that!"
As we climb back to daylight,
Only I
See the sign on the box
Near the gutter:
Place your empties here -
No Deposit,
No Return.
