Hard work, dedication and a busy volunteering schedule are what sets Shirley Corbett apart.
Corbett, 77, was presented last December with the 2008 Mississauga Senior Citizen of the Year Award. The award is presented by the Rotary Club of Mississauga-Lakeshore in conjunction with the City of Mississauga. It honours individuals for excellence in participation and outstanding commitment to the community.
"I'm very involved at the Trillium Health Centre and at the Square One Older Adult Centre," said Corbett, who received the award at the Mississauga Seniors' Centre. "I was taken aback when I got the call. I'm thrilled that somebody would recognize me this way."
Corbett's nominator is anonymous, but she figures it came from either the adult centre or the hospital. She's served as president of both the Older Adult Centre and Trillium's volunteers.
Corbett, who has lived in Mississauga since 1959, has also sat on the hospital's board of directors, and currently volunteers in the orthopedic unit at Trillium and arranges trips for seniors at the Older Adult Centre.
"Her dedication to the Older Adult Centre, Trillium hospital and the Mississauga community are unmatched," said Sue Hesjedahl, executive director of the Older Adult Centre.
