Wednesday, April 8, 2009

Join us at the Toronto Centre for the Arts for the 2006 Tony Award winning musical Jersey Boys.

JERSEY BOYS is the story of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons: Frankie Valli, Bob Gaudio, Tommy DeVito and Nick Massi. This is the story of how a group of blue-collar boys from the wrong side of the tracks became one of the biggest American pop music sensations of all time.

They wrote their own songs, invented their own sounds and sold 175 million records worldwide -- all before they were thirty. The musical features such Four Seasons' hits as “Sherry,” “Big Girls Don't Cry,” “Walk Like A Man,” “Oh What a Night” and “Can't Take My Eyes Off You.” Jersey Boys Song Lyrics.

Directed by two-time Tony AwardŽ winner and Toronto native Des McAnuff, JERSEY BOYS is written by Academy Award winner Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice, with music by Bob Gaudio, lyrics by Bob Crewe and choreography by Sergio Trujillo, another Toronto native.

Born Yesterday at the Shaw Festival

Born Yesterday from Google image http://www.shawfest.com/assets/images/plays/Born-Yesterday.jpg

Thursday, May 21, 2009

Lunch at Betty's Restaurant in Chippewa. A choice of three entrees and delicious desserts. Then onto the Shaw Festival to enjoy the classic comedy directed by Eda Holmes, Born Yesterday. Note: Neil Munro leaves director post at Shaw Festival due to health reasons.

Description of Born Yesterday from Shaw Festival Theatre: When a nouveau riche garbage king arrives in Washington, he decides his very blonde girl friend needs an education. But he gets more than he bargained for as she and her tutor prove that knowledge is power, not to mention very attractive!

Review Summary of Born Yesterday (1950) Film from New York Times: "Judy Holliday won an Oscar for her portrayal of Billie Dawn, a strident, dim-bulbed ex-chorus girl who is the mistress of millionaire junk tycoon Harry Brock (Broderick Crawford). In Washington to put a few senators and congressmen in his pocket (the better to lay the groundwork for an illegal cartel), the rude-and-crude Brock realizes that the unrefined Billie will prove an embarrassment. Thus he hires idealistic but impoverished Paul Verrell (William Holden) to pump some intelligence and 'class' into Billie. Paul does his job too well; by awakening Billie's social and political consciousness, he turns the girl into Brock's most formidable foe in his efforts to buy influence in DC. Along the way Paul and Billie fall in love. Review by Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide."

Teach Me Tonight. Song written by Sammy Cahn and Gene de Paul. Performed by Dinah Washington (1924-1963). Courtesy of Mercury Records.
