The Roman Catholic Church Asserts:
That the Church cannot exalt itself above the scriptures.
Catholic Church "The church formed the canon, or rule, or standard, of New Testament scripture, so as to subject herself to it, and in doing so made clear the true relation between scripture and tradition. The church was responsible for the writing of the New Testament: every book was written by a churchman. It was the liturgical, pastoral, and evangelistic needs of the church which caused them to write as they did and when they did, and it was those needs that largely determined the choice of material selected for their writings...The church cannot, therefore, be separated from the scriptures, but neither can it, if it is true to its own original intention, exalt itself above the scriptures. The formation of the canon was designed to have precisely the opposite effect. Reference 8
Scriptures I will worship toward thy holy temple, and praise thy name for thy lovingkindness and for thy truth: for thou has magnified thy word above all thy name. ~Psalm 138:2
Comments By claiming that the scriptures are not authoritative, and by claiming that the Church is authoritative, the Catholic Church has already exalted itself above the scriptures.
