A German Revange - Mendieta 3'(p) 1-1 Effenberg 50'(p) (4-5 ON PENALTIES) Uefa Champions-League 2000/2001 final San Siro Stadium, Milano, May 23rd 2001 That was the 4th Uefa Champions-League Cup since 1956 FC Bayern Munich won the 2000/01 UEFA Champions League when a penalty save by Oliver Kahn from Mauricio Pellegrino gave them a 5-4 victory over Valencia CF in a shoot-out at Milan's Giuseppe Meazza stadium after the game had finished 1-1 after extra time. Valencia captain Gaizka Mendieta opened the scoring with a penalty as early as the third minute, and four minutes later his goalkeeper Santiago Canizares kept out Mehmet Scholl's spot kick for Bayern. Stefan Effenberg was not so profligate with Bayern's second penalty in the 50th minute, but it was Kahn who had the final say. It was the first time two penalties had been scored in a final and the game opened up thereafter. As it approached its final quarter, Valencia brought on their Slovenian playmaker Zlatko Zahovic for Juan Sanchez but apart from one curling effort that sailed wide he was unable to make much impression. With the game heading for extra time Ayala, a rock for Valencia in central defence, fell awkwardly under no challenge and had to be replaced by Miroslav Djukic. Jancker, perhaps sensing his opportunity, immediately strode through the centre and rifled a shot goalwards. It looked to have the beating of Canizares, but it also sailed beyond the keeper's left-hand post and extra time ensued. The first period saw chances aplenty. Elber, set up by a combination of Kuffour, Jancker and Lizarazu, was foiled on the line by Canizares. Then Ruben Baraja waltzed through the Bayern defence but his final pass to Carew went astray. At the other end Scholl played in Salihamidzic, but again Canizares came to Valencia's rescue. Finally Zahovic, from Carboni's cross, was denied by Kahn. In the second period there were close shaves for Mendieta and Paulo Sergio, but in the end it all came down to the shoot-out.
