Ok, here we are on the
page
that you will learn about Budgies. The first thing
that you should know is, we are not very fond of
CATS. LOL If you
never owned a Budgie before here are some helpful
things you should know. You want a young bird as
they are easier to train. When you see a striped
forehead, that means it's a young bird. Just above
the beak there is a bump that's called the "cere",
from there back are the stripes. If there is a space
between that and the back of the head, then it's an
older bird. Also, if the "cere" is a blue color, that
denotes a male. If it's a whitish tan, pink or a
light brown, then it's a female. As for colors,
Budgerigars are extremely colorful. Everyone of their
feathers is colored. Yet, when inbred mutants are
propagated, the results produced more than 70
distinct color varieties. So pick one you
like. Which comes first, the Budgie or the house
(cage). The house should be there waiting, set up and
all in order when you bring your new pet home from
the store. Have it in a high place so your Budgie
gets a "birds eye view" of his new surroundings. It
should be of a good size to accommodate him and some
toys. Make sure you get a cage with horozontal bars,
that makes it easier for him to get around. Perches
should be of different sizes to allow him to grasp
and exercise his feet. Keep the cage out of sun light
and drafts. Put clean water and food every day and
make sure there is a cuttle bone near a perch. It
helps keep his beak in good shape and provides needed
minerals. As far as treats go, Roy & Joyce have got
some of my favorites. Whenever they make Pasta, I
hear Roy chopping up something in a saucer and I run
over to him and say "Um, Spaghetti" and sure enough I
get my Pasta. They got me stuck on broccoli, string
beans, corn and I won't let Joyce get into a grape
fruit or orange with out me getting mine. Carrots are
also good, but not one of my favorites. Something
else Roy has done is plant my bird seed. When they
grew, he would give me some of the shoots to pick on.
That was a good idea, but I never told him so. Here I
am eating some corn on the cob. What a mess I make of
myself. Toys, we like toys, all kinds. Swings,
ladders, Bells, little push carts and mirrors. But
don't give your guy a mirror until he's older because
we tend to fall in love with ourselves and will pay
more attention to the mirror than you. Roy built me a
"Jungle Jim Perch" and I love it because it has multi
levels for me to climb on. Here is a picture of it,
and me too. Well if you're
willing to go on and read more about me, just click
on the Continue. There will be more of my vocabulary
and other things about me and my cousins. If your
bored, then hit your back button. LOL
