The word "fondue" comes from the French word fondre, meaning to melt. The original fondue was developed in Switzerland from hardened bread and cheese. An enterprising cook discovered that hard cheese melted under heat and that when pieces of stale bread were dipped into the melted cheese, the combination was delicious... thus fondue was created. from The Illustrated Encyclopedia of American Cooking.
