I must admit that I have a soft spot for Sam "Lightnin'"Hopkins. A spot about as big as the State of Texas actually. That's why you'll find so many of his songs here. And I want to add some more when I can. Lightnin' Hopkins was born in Centerville, Texas in 1912 and died in 1982. He acquired his nickname playing as a duo with pianist "Thunder" Smith early in his career.

This page contains lyrics to the following song(s):
Lightnin's take on the "It's Mighty Crazy"-theme, recorded ca. 1967 for Arhoolie (it's on the CD "Lightnin!", Arhoolie CD 390). A somewhat different version by that other Lightnin' (Slim) is also here for comparison.
In this song Lightnin' Hopkins used his familiar technique of letting his guitar finish his lines for him.

Lightnin' recorded this song in 1953 when it was released on the RPM label. It's also on the Ace CD "Jake Head Boogie" (1999). The first verse, the CD notes tell us, is taken from the 1939 recording by Roosevelt Sykes, "Unlucky 13 Blues".
A later version by Lightnin' of this theme is "No Education".

No doubt inspired by recent events, Lightnin' recorded this song in November 1961 in Berkeley, California for Arhoolie. It's on the Arhoolie LP F1011 "Lightnin' Sam Hopkins".
Just look at the people Whoa just look at the peoples I got over here I said just look at the people Just look at the peoples I got over here You know a little sixteen-year-old girl come to me talked and said Lightnin', Would you take me for your souvenir? You know they had a big fire down in L.A. All them buildings is burnin' down Oh they had a big fire down in L.A. (well in Beverly Hills or somewhere a little close) All them buildings is burnin' down You know they was lookin' for the fire trucks And in time none of 'em would come around (Po' children were runnin' and cryin'... They couldn't help themselves, they was talkin' too...) You gotta get this lesson, children You gotta get it from the book Talkin' about the things you buy raw Them is things you gotta cook Mama say she was hungry Round about ten o'clock That was the time the world Was beginnin' to get on a rock That was the burnin' down in L.A. All them buildings was burnin' down Well you know they didn't have enough water to put out the fire 250-some home they got burnin' down

Lightnin' recorded this song on December 2, 1961 in Berkeley, Ca. on a rainy day - it had been raining for weeks, and that clearly got him down. It must have felt like England :)
From the LP "Lightnin' Sam Hopkins" (Arhoolie F1011).
Just take a look at the weather It keep rainin' all the time Just take a look at the weather It keep rainin' all the time You know it be rainin' this minute and the next minute You look up and you'll see sunshine Tell me why there's rain Why it storm in California all the time Tell me why do it rain Why it storm in California all the time I don't want the rain But you still have plenty sunshine You know it keeps on rainin' You know this poor man can't make no time You know if it keeps on rainin' You know this poor man can't make no time You know if I can't go to my job How I'm gonna feed this family of mine? This song was recorded in 1963, right after John Glenn made his three orbits in space, the first American to do so.
This transcription is rather tentative, mainly because Lightnin' frequently had to hurry to fit his lines to the meter!
People I was sittin' this mornin' with this on my mind Said there ain't no livin' man who gone around the world three time But John Glenn did Yes he did He did it, I'm talkin' about him Only did it for fun Half a million dollars made him feel so well He got to eatin' his lunch and couldn't hardly tell He said I feel all right John Glenn said it Everybody was laughin' And dipped in the gritty It was a million prayer went up Prayin' that he would land I looked at a schoolhouse full of men and they didn't know what to say But they said "Let him come back, God Please let him land You know that's the onliest man ever did it And you're the helpin' hand" I see'd him when he left but I didn't see him when he land But I knowed he was doin' all right when they said it is OK to give him a great big hand He'll be in on the ship They say he's on deck His mother say I know my son gonna make it, it ain't never been no mistake You know I wanna tell you somethin', this ain't lyin' You know that man must had on his mind flyin' It ain't nobody will take that for his tryin', unless they gonna build him his own self airplane and they gonna go flyin' They told him "Don't worry, this is true You may miss me for a few minutes but I'll be back to see about you" - He did! Yes he did Yes when he done it, didn't know what had happened the helicopter say - You know they tested that boy's body, even test his heart They knowed he was all right when he was gettin' to start I mean he's made it! He went around the world three times You know he went and got him an airplane, and he made up and had it on his mind That's what he had on his mind He didn't have no kid and he didn't have no digs [?] He just had it in his mind flyin'
Another song from the CD "Sittin' In With"
HOME IN THE WOODS I'm gonna find me another home, I'm gonna find it way out in the woods I'm gonna find me another home, find it way out in the woods So I can let all them no good women know, whoa, I don't mean them no good Yes everybody tells me- in my neighborhood- You mess with a woman she don't mean you no good- I'm gonna find me a home, way out in the woods So I can let all these old no-good women know, I don't mean them no good She used to be a good woman but she didn't do what she should And that's the reason I'm gonna find me a home out in the woods I don't mean them no good Still I want you to know I did the best I could.
A semi-autobiographical blues (Lightnin' did indeed work on the chain gang); from a live recording in the "Second Fret" in Philadelphia, ca. 1963, that was released on the LP "Hootin' the Blues" (Prestige/Folklore 14021).
Yeah you know I worked on the railroad I even worked down on that chain gang Yeah you know I worked on the railroad Oh boy and I worked down on the chain gang Yeah they put me in jail when it was raining Honey that was the best for me Throwed me in the jail when it was raining Honey and that is the best for me You know the jail kept me in [from] the wet I didn't have no place to stay, don't you know When I workin' on the chain gang, ball and chain all around my leg I was workin' on the chain gang, ball and chain all around my leg I said Please don't drive me too hard, I'm an old man They say We don't pay no attention to the age He said Who sent you down here, boy What did you break in this jail for? Who sent you down here, boy What did you break in this jail for? He say You look like a man would kill your mother (And I believe he did) Oh boy what did you kill that old woman for? (A sad time, and I had to cry...) I said mmmmmmm mister jailer, will you please sir bring me the key I said mmmmmmm mister jailer, will you please sir bring me the key I says I just want you to open the door Cause this ain't no place for me
The title song from the Gitanes CD "It's A Sin To Be Rich", with "never-before-released recordings" from May 1972. On a number of these recordings, including this song, Lightnin' was joined by John Lee Hooker.
You know that it's a sin to be rich But it's a low down shame to be poor It is a sin to be rich You know that it's a low down shame to be poor You know a rich man ain't got a chance to go to heaven And a poor man got a hard way to go You know I don't wanna be rich I just wanna stay between rich and poor No I don't wanna be rich I just wanna live between rich and poor Yes when I die you know I wanna go to heaven That's when Po' Lightnin' will have a chance to go Gabriel gonna be the next man to blow that trumpet I wants to be there when he blow (blow, Gabriel) Whoa he gonna be the next man blow that trumpet I wants to be there when po' Gabriel blow Whoa that's when the world be off(?) with the people And I can leay there and rest for sure Everybody!
Lightnin' Hopkins did serve some time on the chain gang; he carried the scars on his leg the rest of his life. This recording is from 1946. He later recorded other blues on this theme, such as Penitentiary Blues in 1959, with more personal lyrics than here.
Well I wouldn't mind staying in jail, but I've gotta stay there so long Well I wouldn't mind staying in jail, but I've gotta stay there so long You know it seem like all my friends, you know they done shook hands and gone Thirty days in jail, with my back turned to the wall Thirty days in jail, with my back turned to the wall Yes you know some other skinner (?) must be kickin' in my stall Hey mister jailer please, will you please bring me the key Hey mister jailer, will you please sir bring me the key I just want you to open the door, cause this ain't no place for me

Lonesome Graveyard (Hopkins) Sleep on, sleep on, sleep on Little girl, sleep on, just sleep on Sleep on, sleep on, Little girl, just sleep on, sleep on Well I know you're dead and resting darling, but one day I know the graveyard's gonna be my home (every living people got to die, human beings) Mama was rocking by the window, Howling: my poor child is dead, yes she's dead Yeah you know my poor child is dead and gone (What made me feel so good, she said this:) Sleep on, sleep on son, Do you know your mother is coming on? Whoa the graveyard ain't too beautiful, But it will give you a home so long. I wouldn't mind dying, Po' Lightnin' would just have to lay dead so long Wouldn't mind dying, but I'd have to lay dead so long That I wouldn't have a chance to come back here and tell my friends, No nobody, what is going on. Told my baby, don't worry if I die, darling, I know I'm gonna leave your little bed warm Don't worry if po' Lightnin' lay down and die, 'Cause I'm gonna leave your little bed very warm Whoa you know, I can't worry when I'm dead and gone, but one thing, Little girl, I know you is coming home.
Lightnin' Hopkins recorded this story about Mister Charlie and the stuttering boy, several times; this transcription - not guaranteed to be 100% correct - comes from the LP "Free Form Patterns", recorded in 1968 in Houston, Texas. (on the back of the record Hopkins' nickname is consistently spelled "Lightin").
The record was re-issued in 1988 by Charly Records (not that same Charly, no doubt :)

(spoken, without accompaniment:) Once in the country there was a little boy; every morning that he would go to the table with his little two sisters and brothers, you know, he would go there, he couldn't talk but his mother didn't know what was wrong with him so... she would go to the table in the morning, she would fix for breakfast, she'd fix toast and coffee, enough, coffee for the tin, toast for the eggs for the church, then she would ask and say, "what you want this morning?" Oh mama, toast and milk, you know things like that you know. But the little old boy he couldn't talk good, so she asked him say "what you want son"? Said "sa-sa-a I want-t t-t-t-" She said "Hush". Say "I tell you what to do. You just hush, I just go bring you what I bring the rest of 'em, cause one of these days I'm gonna learn you how to talk." She goin' back and she fixes, the next morning same thing. "So what would you children want this morning?" "Butter 'n toast mama." Get around to the little old boy, say "What you want"? He say, "bu-bu-bu- bu-bu-bu..." she say "Lord, have mercy," that's what mama said and she walked away, say "wonder what's wrong with my child?" He heard her. But you know the little boy couldn't do no better. So after he'd find out that mama couldn't understand him, and he couldn't understand the way his mama was doin' him, he packed up his little flower sack, and he decide that he would leave. So when he left, on his way, he run up on a old rollin' mill, what they call Mister Charlie's. So he walked up to mister Charlie, mister Charlie was workin' round in his rose bushes 'n things... so he taps him: "mi-mi-mi..." say "Mister!" But he didn't know his name that time. The man straightened up and said "my name is mister Charlie". He say "mi-mi-ch-ch-ch-ch-" He said "but boy I ain't got to fool with you, you can't work." He said, "me-me can work!" So the man went on workin' and he'd tap him again. He said "me-me-me wanna home". He said "look, boy, I've got a old bunk house out in the back," said "and if you promise me that you will stay in this bunk house, and watch my mill, and keep the fire from burning my mill down," say "I live two blocks up the road," say "and if you see the mill's on fire, say you run up and tell me the mill's on fire, you got a home and meal as long as I've got it." "Ta-ta-ta-ta-thank you mister Charlie." So the little old boy went to bunkin' that night. Sho' enough, late one Sunday morning, mister Charlie's mill caught on fire. Which he'd forgot about what he had told the little boy. The little boy run up to him, he was cleaning out his front yard, makin' it beautiful with them rose bushes, you know with them red rose bushes you know how to keep 'em red those rose bushes, and the little boy run up there, tapped him on his back, and he raised up and said "Hey son, why here's you again." "Ye-ye-ye-ye-ye-ye-ye" and he was pointing back toward the mill, tryin' to tell him his rollin' mill was on fire. So mister Charlie said, "I ain't got time to fool with you." So the little boy stuttered too bad for him to understand. So mister Charlie stooped over him again, he pat him on the back, said "ye-ye-ye-ye-your ro-ro-" he said "Wait a minute." He said, "if you can't talk you must sing", and he hollered: (sings) Whooooooooa mister Charlie Do you know your rolling mill is burnin' down? Mister Charlie Do you know your rolling mill is burnin' down? Mister Charlie said if you ain't got no water boy Just let that old mill burn on down Little boy was lonesome, he walked off and cried, he said-- (guitar solo) He walked back and he said it one more time Whooooooooa mister Charlie I won't have no place to stay Mister Charlie I won't have no place to stay Mister Charlie said Boy, you'll have a home with me Just as long as there is a day Little boy sighed and he tell it one more time He hollered at him: Whooooooooa mister Charlie Do you know your rolling mill is burnin' down? Mister Charlie Do you know your rolling mill is burnin' down? Mister Charlie said if you ain't got no water boy Just let that old mill burn on down

"War News Blues" was recorded by Lightnin' Hopkins in the late 1940s or early 1950s. The text doesn't refer to a particular war; perhaps it refers to the beginning of the Cold War, or to the conflict in Korea. It probably reflects the contemporary fear that World War Three could break out at any moment.
From the ACE CD "Jake Head Boogie" (1999).
