Roman Polanski stated his goal in filming "Chinatown" was to make a genuine Hollywood style picture. I don't know that he succeeded, in that Chinatown has a bit more substance than I think that type of movie aspires to.
Film noir and neo-noir are among my favorite genres, and this one is at the top of the list for me. Jake Gittes doesn't know what he's getting into, Evelyn Mulwray is a woman he can't possibly help, and Noah Cross is as evil as they come. Certain scenes still give me chills, even after a dozen viewings.
