G Company of the 16th was formed of men from Travelers Rest back toward Slater.(Co. G -Most of the men in this company are found in the Cleveland and Bates Townships in County Records.MO) It is one of the smaller units of the Sixteenth and like H Company it had some of the best officers in the unit. Capt. Boling acted as regimental commander after the Atlanta battles and until the appointment of B.B. Smith to command in North Carolina. At Franklin, Smith and other Brigade officers were with the Sixteenth, but Boling was the acting commander. At Nashville, Boling was again in command of the regiment. J.D. Cooper and I.W. Herbert were for all practical purposes the color guard until the surrender when B.B. Smith took the flag and protected it until it was returned in 1883. One of the real discoveries to me in the roster was how few men of G Company were killed in action, only eight.

This is my revised roster of Company G, Sixteenth South Carolina. It is drawn from a wide group of sources, there maybe problems with it. However, I better understand it, because I know so many of the men through my father and grandparents.

Of the 133 men of Company G: 20 were captured; 5 at Franklin, of these five, all were known to be badly wounded. Two were captured at Nashville and 4 at Missionary Ridge, One was captured at Decatur, Chickamauga, Pulaski, Tn., Yazoo, Mississippi, and for one it is unknown where the capture took place. Late in the war one was captured at Gainesville, Alabama and one at Hartwell, Ga.

8 were Killed in Action, 24 Died of Illness, and only 3 Died in Prisons. Those killed in action died as follows: 4 at Franklin, 2 at Dallas and one each at Macon and Pine Knot Mt.

In addition to the 8 killed, 27 members were wounded, several on multiple occasions, thus the difference in number of wounds and men wounded. Although it is difficult to see who was wounded at Franklin and who at Nashville, there appears to be 10 at Franklin and 2 at Nashville, 6 at Atlanta and one at Kennesaw Mt., Missionary Ridge, Dallas and North Carolina.

There were 20 men present at the surrender. 11 attended the 1883 meeting where the colors were brought from hiding. Four members of G Company that were captured galvanized or fought for the Union. There was one man in G Company from Alabama, one from Spartanburg, two from Georgia and three from Pickens. Two men deserted. Certainly G Company was one of the lucky companies of the Sixteenth.

Company G was formed in the Upper End of Greenville County, Travelers Rest, Slater, and Hellams Crossing Communities.

Company G, Sixteenth South Carolina and Company F, Third State Troops, 6-62 to 1-63

Many of the men from G Company, served in Company F of the Third State Troops from June of 1862 until January of 1863. This unit of State Troops was commanded by Captain W.H. Goodlett. Numbering with those serving in both units are Elliott Batson, William Batson, William Couch, Henry Hawkins, Jesse Pool and others. Some would join other units, others would find the way back to the 16th. You will note that almost every surname mentioned in G Company of the Sixteenth is to be found on Bil's roster listed below.

Andrew Thomas Wilson, Born 11/07/1821, the son of Emanuel and Delphia Wilson, grandson of Andrew Wilson Sr., who settled on George's Creek, Pickens County, S.C. around 1790. Andrew T. married around 1847. His wife was Martha Wynn, born August 30. 1828 and she died May 4, 1913. She was the daughter of Clemmons Wynn and Jane Benson. Andrew was the father of Elizabeth born 1849, Susan, born 1851, Thomas born 1853, John born 1856, Benjamin born 1859, Emma born 1867, Luther and Lura born 1869. Andrew was a farmer and land owner in Pickens County until 1883. He was a member of Cross Roads Baptist Church. In 1883, the family moved to Walhalla, in Oconee County and shortly thereafter three of his children moved to Chattanooga, Tennessee. He died on May 4, 1913 and is buried at WestviewCemetery, Walhalla, S.C. His Obituary appears in the Keowee Courier of February 22, 1905. Two of Andrew's brothers, John and Robert Wilson, enlisted along with Andrew. Robert is on the Company G roster. A strong family tradition says that Andrew was at Chickamauga. However, since he lost his command in 1862, he would have had to re-enlist.

I think I have identified more cousins. Lt. William U. Hunt Co. K was probably William Uriah Hunt who married Martha Jane Blythe. He was born 1830 and died 1894. His grandfather was pioneeer settler Esli Hunt, Sr. who fought at King's Mountain and with Marion. Lt. Josiah Chandler would either be William A. Tollison's father-in-law or brother-in-law. The father in law died 1880, and the bro. 1863. Lt. Esley Hunt Bates was William Uriah Hunt's first cousin, also a grandson of patriot Esli Hunt, Sr. John S. Foster and Richard F. Foster's brother Capt. RSC Foster, Jr. (some Pickens Co. militia is I guess the origin of captain-he died 1857). married another granddaughter of Esli Hunt. The 1923 funeral of D. F. Batson was preached by Rev. Julius Josiah Earle Foster son to Capt. RSC Foster, a veteran himself who enlisted with a NC unit at 16.I assume that Lt. J.M. McDaniel is his father-in-law James Madison McDaniel, who was himself the son of War of 1812 Quartermaster General James McDaniel. R. H. Huff Co. G, by the way I have him as Richard not Robert was the son of Philip Joseph Huff and was John S. Foster's brother in law. John and Ellen Huff Foster's son John Peter was a career Army non-com who married R.H. Huff's daughter who was his first cousin.

William Hester, CSA - Date of internment: Aug 18, 1864: age 25; cause of death Wounded; Ridge: Soldiers Square; Lot 450; Page Number 74 in Internment Book; # 403 C.S. Soldier. Company G, 16th Regiment, South Carolina

The age is not right but it could be a mistake made during the transcription from the original internment book - cause of death conflicts with the letter from Bates:

Mrs. Hester,

Mam, it is with regret that I have to inform you of the death of your husband WM. Hester. I am on my way to camp and having to stop here a day or two on account of the road being tore up. i went to the Stout Hospital to see if I could find any of my company and looking over the records I found your husband died Friday the 19th. I got all the information about him that I could he died with cronic diarhear. They said he did not talk any hardly for a day or two before he died. He only desired to come home he died very easay. He was decently buried in a good coffin. He left a coat a pair of pants pair of shoes and a hat. I would send them to you if I had a chance but I have no chance at all to send them to you. He had nine dollars in his pocketbook. I have got it and his pocketknife and pocket handkerchief which I will try to keep untill I have a chance to send them to you. I have given you all the information I could get concerning his death. I cannot help but sympathive with you in the loss of your husband for he was a good and true soldier always ready and willing to discharge his duty in the defence of his country.

Your humble servant

Lt. E.H. Bates

Thanks to Janetter for the wonderful letter.

R. H. Huff Died At Noon Sunday Confederate Veteran and Well Known Citizen of County Passes Away

R. H. Huff, well-known citizen of Greenville County, died at his home on the Farr's Bridge Road yesterday at twelve o'clock. Mr. Huff was in his 74th year. Mr. Huff served the entire time of the War Between the States being connected with the 16th South Carolina Regiment. He had been in failing health for about a year and his death, while not unexpected, comes as a distinct shock to his numerous friends throughout the county. Huff, four daughters, Mrs. J. P. Foster, Mrs. J. P. Williams, Mrs. C. S. Wynn and Mrs. J. M. Hodgens. Funeral services will be held at Berea Church this afternoon at five o'clock. Rev. J. R. Aiken will officiate. Interment will be in the family plot at Berea.
From Shari, as always my thanks.

Your website has Elias Pritchett as dying at home. The story that has been passed down from my grandmother Jettie Estelle Pritchett Bridges (1893-1984) was that her grandfather was in Confederate service and was allowed to come home because his wife had triplets. There were three girls born to Elias and his wife Nancy King Pritchett (Lenor, Renor & Ninery). My grandmother talked about those triplets many times. Elias's son William (b1849) was too young to go to war. He told my grandmother about how they had to hide their horses from bushwackers in the mountains. After the war, he married William Henry Langford's daughter Emma Malissa. She was a good bit younger than he was. She died in childbirth.

Found your page on the 16th and it is great. I am a member of the Gen. John B. Gordon Memorial Camp SCV. I am researching the soldiers buried in the Confederate section of Greenwood Cemetery in Barnesville, Ga. I am trying to gather as much info on these men as I can so we can order them new headstones. The old stones are hard to read and have MANY errors. So, I have 2 questions.

We Have a J.L. Pursley no state or unit listed. I found one on the Civil War soldiers and Sailors System listed for the 16th Co.G. Found him on your site but am not sure this is the right man. Could he have been wounded and died in a hospital here in Barnesville

* All the armies of the Confederacy were reorganized in April of 1862. Many officers lost positions and resigned or enlisted in other units. Wm. Faulkner, the Southern writer and Nobel winner, addresses this in Satoris, a novel that is a thinly hidden biography of his grandfather, a Colonel in Confederate Service who lost his position. Most of these men chose to serve in the ranks and more than a few former Captains and Colonels died in those hallowed ranks as private soldiers.
