The Sixteenth and The Palmetto Light Artillery

By the spring of 1864, the Confederacy had reached a critical time. Manpower allotments and pools were no longer sufficient to support operations in the primary theaters of the war. Missionary Ridge, Vicksburg, Gettysburg, and all the other battles had left the Confederacy with few choices concerning men and none of them seemed palatable. Secondary theaters were told to shake out additional men and ship them to more critical areas. General Beauregard in Charleston was viewed as a particularly heinous offender in holding back manpower reserves. The scope of enemy operations in Charleston Harbor and along the Savannah Railway had wound down since the successful Union operations against Morris Island. However, the Union threat was ever present and real. Hagood’s Brigade and Evan’s Brigade were soon to be on the move to North Carolina and then to Virginia.

Major Manigault of the S.C. Siege Train was told to investigate the terms of enlistment for several units in the theater to make certain that these terms were clearly understood by the men and correct. At about this time the commander began to investigate the formation of three companies in the Palmetto Light Artillery. These companies "H,""I", and "K" or Holtzclaw’s, Bowden’s, and Richardson’s Companies, respectively, were found to have been "illegally formed" during the time General Pemberton was in command of the department. The end result was that the companies were disbanded and the men allowed to choose an organization to serve in or they would become subject to The Conscript Act. Wat Garrison, one of the men from Captain Holtzclaw’s Company, who was affected by the reorganization, was more to the point in one of his letters home. "Captain Holtzclaw’s Life Insurance Company was about to go up the spout."

Since most of the men in Companies H and I were from Greenville County; many of the men opted to join the Sixteenth South Carolina. Some were given no choice but were just shipped to the Sixteenth. For most it would be unfortunate. They already felt deeply violated by being asked to serve outside of the state and in addition, these men had volunteered for The Palmetto Light. To disband the Palmetto Light and make them subject to the Conscription Act was a violation of the contract they had made with the State. At least, that is how they saw it. Finally, no self-respecting artilleryman would ever find the infantry a trade up. (Who wants to walk to work when you can ride.)

The worst news was the condition of the Sixteenth. The Sixteenth was an infantry unit which needed replacements, and it was deeply engaged in an active campaign. The final end was that many of these men would not live through Atlanta and for those who did the toll at Franklin and Nashville was heavy.

These men are known to have come to the Sixteenth from the Palmetto Light Artillery. This list is by no means exhaustive, nor is the roster below, but it does give a better idea of the men who transferred who were later killed.

Running the Blockade

Running the Blockade, as A.W.O.L. was commonly known by the troops was always a problem, especially for those units serving on the coast. The following is an arrest order for that offense issued by Captain Holtzclaw in early 1864. Thanks to Susanne Matson for sharing this document.

The Death of Captain Thomas Holtzclaw

HORRIBLE MURDER

May 12 Issue-CAPTAIN THOMAS A. HOLTZCLAW was brutally murdered on Sunday evening last, not far from his residence in this county, about seven miles east. He was returning home from a neighbor's house after dark, accompanied by his wife. Some villain waylaid the road and sprang upon him suddenly and gave a blow on the head with an axe, which crushed his skull, producing instant death. He fell against his wife, who in her terror fled through the woods to their home and gave the alarm.

It is not known that Captain HOLTZCLAW had any enemy bearing him grudge. He was a respectable and peaceful farmer, with a young family growing around him. He was a brave soldier in the late war and commanded a battery of light artillery that was raised in this district.

A negro man, ANDREW, has been arrested by CONSTABLE MOUNCE, against whom there are quite suspicious circumstances.

Note: The Death of Captain Holtzclaw was after the war. SMB

Rosters of
Furman's (Company A), Holtzclaw's (Company H), Bowden's (Company I), and Richardson's (Company K)
of the
Palmetto Battalion Light Artillery.

Company H, I, and K of the Palmetto Light Artillery Battalion were ruled as having been formed in an irregular manner when formed by Pemberton in 1862. The decision came in the spring and summer of 1864. The ruling was disputed and there is some evidence to support the view that Holtzclaw, at least, won part of his company back. Bowden may have done the same, however if this is the case, it came very late in the process and many men were sent to other units, including the Sixteenth S.C.

These units are unique in that rosters often carry a Major in Company A, Major Campbell. Letters support his position and his control over Company A, H, and I, which would be expected, how far his authority extended is unknown, but probably over all companies as would be expected. There is no question that Company A of the P.B.L.A. was a very large unit. Company H was formed from elements of Company A. Company I was formed from elements of both Companies A and Company H. Company K was formed from all of the companies of the P.B.L.A. This is important to know because men may appear on three or four rosters with several different ranks. Holtzclaw and Bowden appear in many rosters of the P.B.L.A. in Company A with a rank of Captain. Although all of this appears odd, I suspect they were attempting to form a Greenville Unit of sorts. If this was the case they appear to have gotten a bit ahead of themselves and the ruling against them dispatched men on the four winds. I know this format is odd and I may change it but the right hand column is designed to give you a headstart if you think a relative may have served in the P.B.L.A. and the Sixteenth. Please note this is based on similar names only and I have done nothing to confirm the information in most cases. The major exception is J.W. Garrison and the men of his mess in the P.B.L.A.; most of these men did go to the Sixteenth, with the exception of Blockade Running Billy Bradley.

Company A, Company H, and Company I were formed by men from Greenville County, with a few men from the surrounding counties. There were a lot of Union men in the P.B.L.A. from the Upper End of Greenville County. That would be expected, as most of these men would have less objection to serving within the state. This isn't much, but it is a start on one of Greenville County's most difficult groups. Good Luck and Good Hunting.

It is difficult for me to tell who was moving from the 16th to the P.B.L.A. and who was moving from the P.B.L.A. to the Sixteenth. The dates in the Combined Service Records do provide some clues. In 1862 and 1863 most of the traffic is from the Sixteenth to the P.B.L.A.; from mid-1864 the opposite is true. The transfers to the Sixteenth, numbered about 150 men, around 30 appear to have died in the Georgia and Tennessee Campaigns of 1864, roughly one-fifth. Given the nature of the fighting in late 1864, this is probably no worse than the other men in the unit and may be considerably better than some companies.

Gilreath, A.J. P I Andrew Jackson Gilreath appears as "A. J. Gilreath, Pvt., Co. I, 3rd PBLA as "enlisted April 27, 1863 at Greenville by Capt Bowden for the War." On the Nov/Dec, 1863 muster roll, he is listed as "AWOL since Dec. 28, 1863, expired furlough." Then, he was back for the Jan/Feb muster roll, listed as "present," and "paid to Dec. 31, 1863." Next, he's "absent sick since April 13, 1864." Then, he receives a certificate of discharge at Charleston, 11 May, 1864. Says he's "born at Greenville, SC, is 38 years of age, a farmer, incapable of performing the duties of a soldier because of Chronic Rheumatism with some spinal affection. The muscles of the right leg are permanently contracted, and this physical disability renders him unfit for service in any Department."
